Then and now: Changes to the Y in South Tahoe

As you approached the Y in South Lake Tahoe from Lake Tahoe Airport, the old photo from about 1963 shows the Smuggler Imports and Tahoe Sierra Market and Hotel white buildings at left. Most of that has been replaced by the South Y Center.

Behind the Standard service station (at right) was Rudy and Jeannie Buchanan’s new Lakeside Theater, which included a residence upstairs. The theater was razed in the late 1990s and replaced by an Office Depot, the building which now houses CVS.

Just to the left of Sierra Market was a small butcher shop and that’s were we bought our meat. Across the street was Lakeside Theater where I saw the film Goldfinger for the first time and saw lots of other good movies there over the years. Just down the road a piece was Lampsons Market on the right as you were headed into town, where the factory stores are now. Raleys at the Y hadn’t been built yet.The Raleys at stateline just had their “Grand Opening”,1964(?) or somewhere in that time frame.

Wow, did the theater really get torn down in the 90’s? It seems like it was only about ten years ago.
Time flies when you’re having fun. . .

The meat counter was actually part of Thaoe Sierra Market. The market was opened in 1938 by Fenn Barkley and his brother-in-law, Harvey Gross. Upstairs were two apartments, where I spent the first two years of my life. The property was sold to Rayley’s in 1969 and the building torn down within a couple of years, making rooom for the shopping center. Many fond memories.
