Opinion: Ecotourism will keep Tahoe blue

Tahoe’s best asset is its natural beauty.

The region holds great potential as an ecotourism destination for low-impact recreation. Paddle-boarding is the latest craze, but high-quality recreation opportunities, such as kayaking, hiking, cycling, back-country skiing and beach-going continue to draw visitors to the Lake Tahoe Basin.

stickerNow, as part of the 20-year planning process, there is an effort under way to build nine urban cores at Tahoe, introducing more congestion, traffic and a degradation of the natural environment that would detract from any visitor’s experience.

The League to Save Lake Tahoe’s vision for the region’s future is simple: a lake that is beautiful and clear, a region that offers abundant low-impact recreation opportunities, a community that is engaged and residents and visitors who are stewards of the lake so that future generations can enjoy Tahoe’s beauty.

    I think it’s correct to really promote green activities, but also face the fact that not everyone is capable or has a desire to only do outdoor activities the whole time they are up here.

    If outdoor activities were the sole thing going on, people wouldn’t stay as many days, leave grandma and grandpa at home, cause they wouldn’t have anything to do, thus losing a room rented + meals, and maybe some shopping & gambling dollars.

    Bottom line is everyone deserves to enjoy Tahoe as long as they aren’t hurting the lake in a major way, and our varied activities here is our STRENGTH.

    Maybe the League and other environmental groups should look at ways to encourage green activity by tourists: maybe a $20 coupon for not arriving by car, how about a voucher for a free bike rental if you arrived by carpool. Improve the bike and pedestrian trails, so people can forgo the car once they get here. Help get our transit situation back on track, so that it works for locals and tourists. Hold informative talks, to educate all about the lake and it’s environs.
