Tahoe benefits from Reid’s success in securing earmarks
By Erin Kelly, Gannett News Service
WASHINGTON — As he fights for a fifth term, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., is touting his clout as a key reason that voters should keep him in Washington.
But just what has Reid’s seniority — and his powerful position as majority leader — brought Nevada?
The answer, if you look just at the federal earmarks he’s gotten in the past two years to fund Nevada projects, is nearly $662 million, to pay for everything from Lake Tahoe restoration to firefighting equipment for Reno.

Where the earmark money has gone

Reid ranked No. 6 in the Senate in fiscal year 2010 for the number of earmarks he got for his state, according to Taxpayers for Common Sense, an anti-earmark group.
Ear marks from Ried and others in congress is one of the reasons this country is in a world of hurt. Hope the Nevada voters make a change in November.
In one breath everybody says earmarks are bad. Then when the pork comes to THEM, it’s a wonderful thing. Political hypocrisy. If the government would get out of our way, we’d all be able to support ourselves SO MUCH BETTER! Let us keep our money instead of taking it all through tax here and fee there. How much more efficient would it be if we each got to spend our own money on what we think is important instead of the government taking it from us and then doling it back to us in little bits for what THEY deem is important?
Earmarks may help a specific community, but they hurt the nation as a whole! Harry Reid, by being a champion of earmarks damages Tahoe! That’s because he’s part of the process that’s bankrupting America!!
Earmarks are the congresses form of bribery. I’ll vote for your bill if you add my pet project to it. Earmarks should be illegal. Every law should have to stand on its own merits and be voted for or against as a single issue.
