Reno airport passenger count bodes well for economy

More cargo and passengers are moving through Reno-Tahoe International Airport, a harbinger of better economic times ahead for the area, Krys Bart, the airport’s chief executive officer, said last week.

“Airports are early indicators of the economy and these numbers are a sign of recovery for our community,” Bart said.

Cargo moving through the airport jumped by almost 20 percent in November compared to the same month last year, and the percent of passengers has risen by 1.7 percent since July 1, the start of the airport’s fiscal year.

The larger jump in cargo compared to the more modest increase in passenger traffic also follows the normal airport indicators of an economic upturn, Bart said.

“Cargo rebounds first because it is directly related to business activity,” she said. “If we have increased business activity, we should see increased wages and more disposable income, and then we should see increased passenger activity, too.”

Wow, a 2% increase in passenger traffic? How will the airport withstand the additional workload? They might have to hire one more employee to handle to onslaught. (apology for sarcasm)

What this propaganda fails to mention is that traffic levels have fallen back to 1994 levels. This is about 1/2 of the former highs of 2003-2006.

So if I do the math, at a 2% rate of growth, RTI should be back to maximum throughput by the year 2024. C’mon Ms. Powers and Reno Gazette Journal, let’s mix in a little bit of a realistic perspective with your amateur journalism.

Did you calculate your 2024 number by compounding 2%? Show us the equation you used.
What basis do you have for assuming that 2%/yr will be the growth rate?

Then South Shore airport only good for BS council sessions to burn up utilities cash for empty seats.

IT MUST BE BACK TO 1969 GROWTH RATE.
