Pro athletes express climate change concerns to students

RENO — Carbon emissions and global warming are not concepts easily conveyed to teenagers. Telling them what it might mean to their ability to ski in Tahoe in the future made it real.

“It wasn’t a boring way of learning,” student Tyler Groves said.

The nonprofit Alliance for Climate Education is on a road trip in the Reno and Truckee era; bringing extreme athletes to high schools to give testimonials blended with fast-paced cartoons to get the message out.

That’s what ACE’s presentation consisted of Tuesday morning at North Valley High School in Reno. The group recruited acclaimed snowboarders Iris Lazzareschi and Moss Halladay to speak with students about the ways climate change has affected their sport.

“It’s something we got to take care of,” Halladay said to the crowd of about 400 fervent students.

Lazzareschi was quick to add her voice, explaining how she and Halladay had to cancel a trip to Alaska this year because of a lack of snowfall.

“We can’t shoot when there’s no snow,” Lazzareschi said of needing to interrupt the film schedule.

ACE spokeswoman Rebecca Anderson did most of the talking; telling students they need to reduce their carbon footprint and staying informed about the environment.

Anderson’s roughly 30-minute presentation ran consecutively with a fast-paced animation meant to illustrate all her main points. Trees reducing greenhouse gases were shown eating away at the gases as if they were malnourished animals.

The video also offered an array of statistics like the average young person needs 21 football fields worth of waste to accommodate for their consumption of energy.

“You don’t have to live large to live well,” Anderson said.

A cartoon depicting a teenager running quickly across an endless stretch of connected football fields brought the students into an uproar.

“That’s tight!” a student in the front of the auditorium shouted.

Shortly before ending the presentation, the discussion’s mood became somber. Halladay, who is from Tahoe City, explained how many of his friends cannot find work in the Tahoe area because of low snowfall, which ultimately creates a vicious cycle of unemployment and turmoil for the region.

“It doesn’t care, like, what you think about it,” Halladay said. “It affects you.”

When shown an idyllic video where world carbon emissions are restrained and clean energy is the standard, students broke into commotion and raised their hands in unison when asked whether they would like to make that vision a reality.

“I think (the talk) was informative,” senior Jaffar Richardson said.

As the event came to a close, many students rushed the stage to snag autographs before heading back to class.

In the end, Anderson said her motive is more than just scaring kids about the future environmental outlook.

“As the next generation, they have the opportunity to change (the situation),” Anderson said. “It’s not going to be easy, but it needs to happen. After all, they’re going to be the ones most affected by it.”

More information is on the ACE website.

Nice propoganda. When did pro athletes get science degrees? And when have they shown themselves to be good stewards of the environment, jetting off to competitions and filming opportunities all over the world to helicopter into remote glaciers all for a thrill and a paycheck?
All that stuff is just fine, I love what they do. But don’t be telling everybody else that they have to worry and conserve while you’re out living large. It’s hypocritical.
And let’s see these folks’ scientific credentials before we put them out there teaching kids “the facts”.

    Dogwoman,
Please do a little research first before you slam these athletes. This “Hot Climate/Cool Athletes” initiative is a collaboration between the Association for Climate Education (ACE) and Protect our Winters (POW). POW is an organization that emphasizes non-motorized backcountry travel such as snow-shoeing and splitboarding.

Second, it’s a little absurd of you to demand that these athletes possess scientific credentials to be reliable sources. It’s called using role models to convey a persuasive message. High school students would be bored to death by a panel of climate experts using scientific jargon. Because the athletes are much easier to relate to, students are much more likely to attend to and accept their message.

Yep. They talk the talk, but want everybody else to walk the walk. That’s all I’m sayin’.

Dogwoman … go and see the presentation. Talk to the athletes and the kids. Being an arm chair Monday morning quarterback lacks creditability.

    Are you in?

Okay, I’m a heretic. Burn me at the stake.

  6. DAVID DEWITT says - Posted: March 23, 2011

Is it legal to put nonsense in students heads and can anyone brainwash our children?? Should we not at least present both sides of this situation ??

  7. PubWorksTV says - Posted: March 23, 2011

With education like this you’ll end up where you are.

Mass ignorance, liberally indoctrinated and on the brink of financial collapse.

  8. snoheather says - Posted: March 23, 2011

There is scientific proof that the earth’s climate is changing. That is not ignorance or propaganda just pure fact. Our world is becoming increasingly polluted and to sit there and say it is natural and does not have an influence on our climate is a sign of true ignorance. It does not hurt anyone to be a little more environmentally aware. Be a part of the solution not the problem.

  9. the conservation robot says - Posted: March 23, 2011

Dogwoman got served. And all of the sudden…. she seems to have respect for scientific credentials and facts.
Ask her about evolution and if homosexuality is a choice or innate.

  10. PubWorksTV says - Posted: March 23, 2011

    snoheather,

Of course the climate is changing, that is a foolish foolish point. The question is whether or not it is caused by mans activities. That issue there is no proof of, NONE.

There are theories and postulations true, There are also financially motivated consensus statement that have done great harm to the scientific research communities reputation. Gov funded research has downsides!

As for the world being more polluted – that too is true but here in the USA it is less polluted than when I was a kid. By Far. We use to pull used washing machines out of creek beds. Some cars would burn oil at quarts per tank of gas.

So you are wrong on that point too.

A person tieing the issue of the worlds timeframe to their insignificant time on earth is, as Limbough pointed out, the ultimate arrogance and a sign of ignorance and poor critical thinking skills.

  11. dogwoman says - Posted: March 23, 2011

Wow, point out a little bit of hypocrisy (which non of my critics has addressed yet) and the attack robots come out of the woodwork!

  12. snoheather says - Posted: March 23, 2011

PubWorks- Quoting Limbaugh shows your true ignorance. Nothing he says is based on any sort of facts, just pure raw emotion. There is nothing you will say to me that will change my opinion on the matter of the environment. Just like I can’t say anything that will change you’re opinion on this. Have fun sticking your head in the sand and I’ll keep doing what I can in regard to my overall effect on the environment.

  13. Tahoe Freedom Fighter says - Posted: March 23, 2011

    Hear! Hear! Dogwoman.
It’s just like all the actor “experts” who never finished High School, giving their opinions on every subject under the sun!

  14. DAVID DEWITT says - Posted: March 23, 2011

Of course there is climate change we have more snow this winter than we did last winter now what does that prove ??

  15. Aaron says - Posted: March 23, 2011

David-It proves that there’s a difference between climate and weather, flip through a dictionary sometime.

PubWorks-If you’re going to try to make an argument about ignorance and poor critical thinking skills, try taking a refresher course on basic grammar and spelling skills first. It severely lowers your credibility. Second, there are significant amounts of research that demonstrate the effects of human activities on the climate. For example, levels of ocean acidification are higher than they have ever been in earth’s history. This is due to increased amounts of Carbon Dioxide and reduced amounts of CO2 “sinks” such as rainforests (think deforestation) to name a few human related causes. So, to sum up, try educating yourself with more than the 24 hour loop of Fox News and maybe pick up a scientific journal sometime (check out Google Scholar).

  16. PubWorksTV says - Posted: March 23, 2011

I’ll tell you what the kids should be learning, and from a business person, is how much the high cost of energy in the State of California effects the ability to compete in production and how that has helped destroy middle class jobs.

  17. DAVID DEWITT says - Posted: March 23, 2011

You can get as nit picking as you want but none of your high paid climate geeks can not tell you why there is more snow this year than there was last year and when some one finds out that they cannot answer whats going on in there own back yard they may have to go to work / talk about credibality try making your point with out calling people names it does not improve your logic

  18. Aaron says - Posted: March 23, 2011

David- No one was doing any name calling. I was simply saying that it makes an argument hard to understand when you have to work through horrendous grammar. For example, your own use of a double negative actually ran contradictory to the point you were trying to make.

Also, you cannot use one winter to explain millions of years of climate data. In the same way that you should not use this winter to disprove global warming, I won’t use last fall’s record breaking heat as proof of global warming. One season of weather does not explain a climate as a whole.

  19. PubWorksTV says - Posted: March 23, 2011

    Aaron,
So what – there is research. So what ??? – Like I said there is NO PROOF. What part of that don’t you understand? (Think cow flatulent)

Your point is that of a fool! You said

“For example, levels of ocean acidification are higher than they have ever been in earth’s history.”

… how would you possibly know what the ocean acid levels were over the past 4 billion years? Huh? Did some teacher tell you or Al Gore himself?

  20. DAVID DEWITT says - Posted: March 23, 2011

I will attempt to determine when i run the snow blower in the morning if i am removing climate change snow or weather snow. And i was not aware that i was being graded on my writing skills.

Here is something for all of the skeptics out there.
Here is every argument from skeptics, refuted, with references, all in one page.

    http://www.skepticalscience.com/argument.php

I’ll just comment on this one real quick
“how would you possibly know what the ocean acid levels were over the past 4 billion years?”
Ice cores give us a record of several hundred thousand years. Before you say ‘well thats not billions’, consider that the time from the industrial revolution to now, is a fraction of the record of climate we have.

Also, in science, there is rarely ever black and white ‘proof’. Anyone with moderate knowledge of science, the scientific method, etc, should know that.

  23. the conservation robot says - Posted: March 23, 2011

‘There are also financially motivated consensus statement that have done great harm to the scientific research communities reputation. Gov funded research has downsides!’

The fossil fuel industry has spent a lot of money funding research. just like the tobacco industry did. And their research is trash, absolutely laughable, and everyone knows it. So now they just ‘spread the seeds of doubt’. Not even questioning science at all. Just taking advantage of the of scientific knowledge in this country and the anti-intellectual sentiment.

  24. DAVID DEWITT says - Posted: March 24, 2011

Funding for climate studies depends on dire predictions without it some people would have to get a real job

  25. DAVID DEWITT says - Posted: March 24, 2011

YOU WILL NOTICE THAT GLOBAL WARMING HAS BEEN ABANDON THEY HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO PROVE ANYTHING AND HAVE BEEN SHOT DOWN SO MANY TIMES THAT THEY HAVE CHANGED TO CLIMATE CHANGE. CLIMATE CHANGE CAN MEAN ANYTHING THEY WANT IT TO.

  26. dogwoman says - Posted: March 24, 2011

Golly, all this scientific mumbo-jumbo and back and forth nonsense (primarily from the robot) and all I was trying to do was point out the HYPOCRISY of extreme athletes (and also politicians like algore) who tell others to conserve while they fly around the globe every chance they get in jets, helicopters, etc, to go ski pristine mountains and ride in untouched deserts that most of us would never be able to approach. It’s about hypocrisy. Do as I say, not as I do.

  27. Julie Threewit says - Posted: March 24, 2011

Lots of folks at home typing who may want to get outdoors to help the community!

To those of us who comment regularly, say “yes” to my laketahoenews.net challenge. See the story that Kae wrote earlier in the week about helping the Rotary Club. Remember, if you can’t do the manual labor there will be other ways to support the effort. Do something tangible to make things better for others!

    Just say “YES”!

  28. the conservation robot says - Posted: March 24, 2011

David, Climate Change is a more accurate term.
And what have the scientists been shot down on?

Here is something to think about…
How many peer reviewed research papers challenge the science and the concept of anthropogenic climate change?

    Zero.
Despite all of the scientists funded by the fossil fuel industry, they can’t get a single paper published. Because their science is rubbish.

Everyone should take a look at the link I posted.

Dogwoman if you don’t have any respect for science or scientists, and their work, you should keep that to yourself. Do they make you feel bad with all of their data and foreign lexicon.
