LTVA: Road closure won’t dampen enthusiasm for bike race
By Kathryn Reed
While the good of the Amgen Tour de California bike race was touted, that’s not all South Lake Tahoe City Council members wanted to hear from the South Shore’s tourism agency.
Carol Chaplin, executive director of Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority, gave a brief update Tuesday about the multi-day bike race through the state that starts at the state line.
“This really has long-term benefits,” Chaplin said of the event. Much like the annual celebrity golf tournament, exposure for the area via the media pays dividends down the road with increased travel by people who see the race or read about it.
Mayor Hal Cole asked if people are canceling room reservations now that Highway 50 will be closed over Echo Summit that weekend. Chaplin didn’t know, but said she’d get back to the city with that information.
Councilman Tom Davis’ concern is if jobs are going to be lost with the main artery to the South Shore off-limits for 10-14 days starting May 11.
To this, Chaplin pointed out May is the shoulder season and to have an event like Amgen will be a boon for the area – despite the roadwork. Plus, the route to town is being billed as a scenic 35-mile detour from the Bay Area or Sacramento.
Chaplin’s big concern locally is realizing many in the area don’t even know about the bike race and how it could affect them. In fact, 10 days of events start Thursday.
The race starts at 10:30am May 15, with cyclist going around the lake 1.5 times before finishing at Northstar. Rolling road closures lasting up to 30 minutes will occur as the riders go by.
This means most businesses along the route will be impacted. People going to church late that morning should think about attending the early service.
Highway 50 is being designed to be one big party with kiosks from the Y to Stateline.
Chaplin said a special guest is in town. “You may see him riding,” she told the council May 3. She smiled, and wouldn’t give any hints.
Lance Armstrong isn’t competing, but he knows his way to Tahoe – having played in the celebrity golf tournament. And Greg Lemond’s last known address was Reno — and he’s very familiar with the roads here. But with everyone in lycra and bike helmet looking similar, the mystery rider might be able to stay incognito for a while.
I heard that Cal Trans wanted to do the work earlier (in April), but Heavenly Mountain complained that their last weekend they were open would be impacted. Apparently, no one else in the South Shore thought it was a big deal to have HWY 50 closed during what is arguably one of the biggest events to come to the South Shore…so Heavely won…
A lot of people complained about the road closing before Easter. Perhaps you would like to read this story to be more informed: https://www.laketahoenews.net/2011/03/echo-summit-closure-could-impact-s-shore-ski-resorts/.

Road closure seems to be the word in the bay area!!!!!!!!!
Just close all them, then we all can ride bikes, walk to work, ban cars for two weeks so we can tell the difference between fresh and smelly air.
Lake Trout could care less.
Special guests will be in town on May 15th! 2008 Olympic medalists in BMX Racing, Donny Robinson (bronze) and Mike Day (silver)! Along with the olympic training coach Greg Romero the athletes will be performing a BMX racing skills exhibition on a demonstration course in the parking lot of the old Millers Outpost. Donny Robinson’s sponsor Hyper BMX bikes will donate a BMX bike to raffle. Raffle tickets are available at South Shore Bike shop (need not be present to win…but why wouldn’t you be present?)
Join the party at the most exciting corner in SLT at the Y on May 15.
I’m seriously looking forward to it! I think it’s going to be a blast of a weekend! Not sure how to get around to the events, but I’m sure we’ll figure it out!
@Volunteer: the roadwork could no way have started in April. Don’t you remember the weather?! Those poor workers would have been hanging off of ice-falls and glaciers and getting blown off the walls!
Hell, why fool around ,why not just spend a ton cash, longer time, widen the whole frigging road,it’s only needed to be done for the last 40 years.
Truthful ,I’m a lucky person to be coming home from the old Sierra Ski Ranch many moons ago.I managed to get my two front tires up over that old stone barrier IN A SNOW STORM,I was so lucky as a tourist casino bus just almost couldn’t stop.(pushed me over the edge)I had to swerve to stay out of a head on collision.
I always envision a roof be made high enough with a steep pitch to unload mountain snow slides over on into the Myers valley.
They have those kind tunnels over on the railroad tracks by Truckee ,over the summit.
JUST CURIOUS,HOW MANY LOCALS WILL MAKE A DIME WITH EMPLOYMENT ON THIS PROJECT,IT’S PAR FOR THE COURSE THAT NO ONE GETS HIRED.
ASPHALT,CEMENT, MAKE A FEW MAN HOURS BUT THE REST,GOOD LUCK.
DID ANYBODY ELSE NOTICE THIS?
