Updated: May 31, 5:05pm.

Session No. 2 of a newly formed work group committed to the development of community-based services for people with disabilities around Lake Tahoe will be June 27 from 1-3pm.

Through the efforts of this group the goal is the needs that exist for opportunities and options for this population can be met by coming together creatively through sharing ideas and resources.

In session No. 1 people identified some of the things community has and identified some of the things it needs.

In the upcoming session the following issues will be addressed:

1) Within existing services, how do they currently work together/with families?

2) What ideas do we have to generate new inter-agency partnerships?

The meeting is at Lake Tahoe Christian Fellowship, multipurpose room, 3580 Blackwood Road, South Lake Tahoe.

RSVP to Nancy Libby at (530) 577.3221.

I have an interest in handicap access to beaches at Lake Tahoe. My entire extended family has been vacationing at Tahoe for 60+ years (Meeks Bay and Homewood area). Now 2 family members are in wheel chairs or using walkers and can no longer traverse the beach sand. (Standard wheel chairs & walkers do not work adequately in sand). Special “beach access wheel chairs” (motorized or attendant-pushed, with special tires for the sand) are available on the internet for anywhere from $900 to $2500 and up, and some can even be wheeled right into the lake. They’re a little too expensive for a once-a-year trip to Tahoe. Does any business at Tahoe rent these by the day or week?

If not, it might be something you’d care to recommend to Tahoe beach resorts. Or perhaps Rotary Club or some other charity groups might be interested in assisting beach resorts in purchasing them for their disabled guests so that they, too, can enjoy the Tahoe beaches with their families.
