John Hunsberger, 60, of South Lake Tahoe died from the injuries he sustained this month when he stepped from a Nifty Fifty Trolley, according to police officials.

The incident occurred July 11. Hunsberger died at Renown Medical Center in Reno on July 15.

He is the fourth person this year to die in a traffic related accident in South Lake Tahoe.

To help combat traffic incidents, South Tahoe officers will be out in force in the Al Tahoe neighborhood this coming week.

Between July 11-24 South Lake Tahoe police officers conducted a concentrated traffic enforcement program within the Tahoe Keys neighborhood as part of its Neighborhood Traffic Enforcement Program. During that time, 54 traffic stops were conducted by officers, with 10 citations written for speed, 17 for stop sign violations, three for other traffic violations and 37 written warnings were issued.

Nothing much stepped-up police patrols could have done to prevent THIS situation. Most of what they’re doing is revenue enhancement. One of the things they NEED to be doing is bicycle enforcement. Good heavens, it’s RIDICULOUS out there near the bike rental shop on Emerald Bay!

I agree with dogwoman on the bicycle enforcement. Personally, I have had a few run ins with bicycler’s not having respect for us drivers. They also need to share the road.

What I like is the “Stop signs do not apply to me” mentality that seems to affect some bicyclists at stop signs on bike trails or streets. Then when they almost collide with your vehicle they either give you a dirty look or flip you off!

Want to produce a revenue ? start making bikes have a license fee, they should be following the rules of the road like everyone else, when this was brought up the the X City Manager KERRY MILLER, he said no because he had 6 kids!

“Locals” should respect speed limit signs. Many, many locals use residential streets as high-speed shortcuts, endangering children and cyclists as they do. Bicyclists are not the problem. If a cyclist makes a mistake, it is he who pays the proce.

Be a neighbor, not a “local,” and drive the speed limit while you shortcut through residential neighborhoods.

At neighbor, bicyclists are an issue. When I am driving safely down the road and obeying traffic laws, I expect the same in return. When you got them pulling out in front of you on the highway ( sometimes in large groups) and you have to slam your brakes to prevent an accident, there is an issue. Especially when MY two year old child is in the car. It is called having respect for the road and others.

Jack/John was a dear friend, and I just found out about his death today. After researching, I found this website. I am grateful this is here but devastated to see that this was an ongoing issues in SLT. I am hurt and sad, and I can only wonder if anyone has information that will allow his family back east to know. We sporadically talked in the last ten years, and when I called SLT to wish him a Happy Birthday on the 18th, he’d already passed but no one knew. Please if you can give me any additional information, I would appreciate it very much.

    Blessings, Angelique
