Demolition begins start of park in South Tahoe
Often it’s the quick demolition route developers will take to get rid of one project to build another. Materials are thrown in the trash with no consideration for their reuse potential. This is not the case with Edgewood Companies and the sustainable deconstruction effort at 1209 Bonanza Ave., the site of the former C&M Lodge.
“In November, we first initiated a recycling program at the C & M Lodge site by donating all the furniture and fixtures to several regional nonprofit organizations. On June 22, we continued our recycling effort with the physical removal of buildings that resulted in a significant amount of salvageable material made available for recycling,” Brandon Hill, project manager for Edgewood Companies, said in a press release. “This is sustainable deconstruction versus pure demolition and landfill. In the end, we were able to recycle well over 50 percent of total material by weight.”
Edgewood Companies is in the process of permitting a neighborhood park at the Bonanza site. In a partnership with South Lake Tahoe, the company will donate 1 acre to the city for the new park.
Edgewood Companies will also be performing the construction of this park. Their participation includes the recycling, deconstruction, donation of the land and the construction of the actual park on which the neighborhood had input. For that they are purchasing and being allowed to transfer a certain number of Tourist Accommodation Units (TAUs) from the City of South Lake Tahoe to their project near Edgewood.
Nothing in this world is free and this appears like a nice, reasonable deal. Congratulations to the residents in that Bonanza neighborhood on getting a new park and getting rid of a rundown eyesore and congratulations to Edgewood for being a good partner.
Comes a few years too late for us. Thanks to the former owner of the motel, who I understand is a real estate agent, he let it be run by a druggie and she rented to a lot of people right out of jail with drug problems. There was constant traffic in and out of there. We suffered a big loss because of that motel’s clientele and visitor’s there to get loaded. Hope the owner sleeps well at night knowing what he did to a neighborhood just for the sake of money.
Let’s hope the park doesn’t turn to be a hangout for the type of vagrants that lived at the motel. Or worse yet – a place for the kids who write graffiti in that area.
As a 19 neighbor to the park, I’m thrilled! Our neighborhood is slowly being reinvigorated. Those of us who live there have seen the Sunshine Inn be taken over, remodeled and landscaped. Apartment buildings are getting a much needed facelift on D Street and homes that were empty from foreclosure are being purchased by individuals who care about what their property looks like. Albeit the change has been slow, but it is change none-the-less with the park being a wonderful addition and reward to an area that is changing for the better. By putting in this community park, Edgewood properties is giving my neighborhood a great boost in self esteem.
