Producers from the Oprah Winfrey Network will be providing a top notch locksmith to help crack open a safe that may have belonged to a Stateline casino owner who was killed by a car bomb in 1968.

The television network, producers and the locksmith are flying in Tuesday to see if they can open the safe which was found during the demolition of a building that once housed two casinos in the region — Barney’s Casino and Bill’s Lake Tahoe Casino.

Mike Laub, an attorney, owns both properties and plans to turn the site into a mall including a pharmacy, a jewelry store, a Pilates studio, a clothing store, another casino and a restaurant and bar.

But all work on the $10 million project has stopped since the 4-foot-tall, locked black safe was found late Thursday afternoon.

The safe was hidden underneath a staircase and was completely sealed off, giving the discovery an air of mystery and intrigue.

Good idea Robert. They should have LTN present when they open it, so we will know there was no switcheroo ;)

I’ve got an old drawer underneath my toilet I’ve been wanting to open. Wonder if they could stop by my place on the way out of town?

All the way from the east coast wow! There is plenty of local talent that can open the safe in no time.

That safe was made years after the death of the casino owner in 1968.

This model Major safe was made years after the last casino owner was killed in 1968. Also the reason you see the handle down in a few of the photos is they broke the rivet on the handle cam by trying to force the handle. The rivet is a shear point made to break and cause a spinning handle. I think the safe is empty and was put there to get some publicity.

I doubt it was put there for publicity. The picture with the metal wall framing around the safe is very typical. The old safes in the casinos were (and in a couple of places, still are) very heavy and/or were built into a wall or ground and cannot be moved. It appears Bill’s (or maybe even Barneys) couldn’t lift it to get it out so just put a little wall around it.

The construction crews have been working there, removing the old siding. Can’t wait until something is open there and the dirty, graffiti populated walls are a thing of the past.
