South Lake Tahoe residents cultivating medical marijuana must submit an application for a permit no later than Dec. 20 or face a fine of $1,000 per day. Applications and permit procedures are available online.

The city is also providing opportunities for residents to report a possible marijuana cultivation operation in their neighborhood. Residents may submit the information online and anonymously through the city’s website.

Just as I have been warning all this time, we see the true agenda of the city council members to re-criminalize medical marijuana. Now anyone can turn in anyone else to trigger a police raid, even if you are in full compliance with state medical marijuana laws.

If the city even suspects you are in violation of their illegal ordinance, you will be raided, your electricity shut off, your name and address made public and you will face fines of $1,000 per day.

The city council has cynically chosen to ignore state law and place more restrictions on bona fide patients than any other jurisdiction in California.

Look for police raids and traumatized patients coming to your local neighborhood. Look for major lawsuits and civil rights cases to be lodged against the City of South Lake Tahoe. Truly, South Lake Tahoe has taken a bold step forward, into a pile of bovine fecal matter.

Thankfully, the city council did honor one of my requests and removed criminal penalties from their ordinance.

So, what is the county doing?

The county and DA have shown genuine respect for patients and their gardens. If you live outside the City of South Lake Tahoe, and you obey the state laws, you are safe in El Dorado County.

The SLT Police have been very respectful to medical cannabis patients. In fact, our local police are some of the best police I’ve ever had the honor to meet. I suspect they don’t appreciate being forced to take on new rolls as home invaders and narcs.

Could there be a little reluctance by our noble police department to go after the low hanging fruit? Dangerous criminals shoot back and are, well, dangerous. Medical patients are easy targets that make the police, they think, look like they are “doing something”. While any dangerous crime is scary and hard to do. Perhaps priorities should be examined. Yeah, right.

So who thinks that the police should not have entered the house on Washington? That tenant, claiming medicinal needs, placed the entire neighborhood at risk of fire with illegal electrical changes and has ruined the homeowners’ investment. Thank God the neighbors were paying attention.

If someone was in compliance, is it not that big a deal? They might say, you go some complaints about the odor, maybe you should look into getting better control over that, so your not a nuisance to your neighbors.

If I kept a pet skunk at my house, I would fully expect that my neighbors might report me as a nuisance. It’s not a pleasant smell.
