Washoe County looking for people to paint over graffiti

The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office is asking for volunteers to help turn the tide on graffiti vandalism by taking part in a graffiti cleanup event at the Sun Valley Community Center from 10am-2pm Oct. 6, weather permitting.

The department is also looking for concerned citizens to donate paint, brushes and gloves to the effort.

Graffiti vandalism is now one of the public’s foremost quality of life concerns. Scrawls of graffiti are popping up everywhere throughout Northern Nevada: parks, highway overpasses, street signs, even the most pristine of landmarks.

The lame joke at South Lake Tahoe during the spring/summer of 2010 when a huge group went all over the city covering up the graffiti with a light brown paint, now they can tell the new news from the old news, as the old grafiti was covered up. Still looks like a war zone.I personally don’t see government employees at historically problem areas being cooperative with relatively law abiding citizens.

Somewhere I got the idea that this was a job for people sentenced to perform community service, that they were supposed to attempt to remove the graffiti before resorting to painting over it, that they were supposed to make an effort to match the color of the underlying surface, AND that the materials were to be paid for out of fines collected from petty criminals.
