Lahontan seeks comments on use of pesticides in water

image_pdfimage_print

The Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board wants to allow pesticides in water on a limited basis. This requires amending the current rules.

Circumstances eligible for a prohibition exemption involve the use of aquatic pesticides for purposes of protecting public health and safety for things like vector control and drinking water protection, plus ecological integrity that include fisheries management and aquatic invasive species control.

Comments were taken on the plan amendment for 45 days ending May 13. Because of those written comments and the ones submitted at the two public hearings, one of the chapters requires more public review. The latest round of comments is open until Nov. 14 at noon.

Documents for review are available at the Lahontan Water Board’s website at under the “Pesticide Basin Plan Amendment – Revised Draft Documents Provided for Public Comments” heading. For a hardcopy of the draft documents, contact Amber Wike at (530) 542.5400 or at awike@waterboards.ca.gov.

Are aquatic pesticides safe for drinking water?

    Or will it cause cancer?

The sure way to find out if these pesticides are safe for drinking water is to have one of the proponents drink a glass of it, in front of witnesses.

Hopefully they will not be allowed in Lake Tahoe.

We must eradicate aquatic invasive plants before the lake is filled with them. Wake up people.

Just to put things into perspective, the amount of herbicide used by the residents of the keys is less than what the professionals plan to use.
The chemicals degrade from the sun or from bacteria in the water and is undetectable in a week or so.

@ Conservation Robot, how do you know this? How frequently are they using herbicides in the Keys? Who manages that? The residents or the HOA?

The residents spray herbicide all the time, and then water their lawns too much. Every person with a lawn has a big bottle of round up in the garage. And there is no oversight. Many of the banks along the water are over grown and full of weeds. And people will spray.
