Sierra clears 1,750 lbs. of garbage from its slopes

More than 175 people helped clear more than 1,750 pounds of trash from Sierra Resort on Oct. 16.

Found during the annual Keep Sierra Clean Day were two snowboards, a few skis, an iPhone, a digital camera and a lift ticket from back when the resort was called Sierra Ski Ranch.

Plastic bottles, cans, trail fencing and signs were also collected.

Sierra employees spend the winter and summer months cleaning up the base area and parking lots, but cleaning up the slopes is a job that takes many helping hands.

One summer when I worked at Heavenly, I decided to pick up as many water bottles as I could. I picked up over 50 large plastic bags filled with water bottles. I never could understand how anyone could just throw them into the pristine forest. Please leave only tracks and take only memories. Thank you.

The Forest Service should make regular, diligent cleaning up of this trash a mandatory condition of the permit it grants to operate a ski resort on public land.

Well here’s a tip for you. Back when I worked there I used to hike up under the chairlifts on west bowl and gunbarrel at Heavenly Valley every summer. You would not believe the stuff I found! Sure I picked up trash that I put in my burlap sack , but I also found sunglasses, cameras, watches, even money. A bunch of stuff.

So yes dumbfounded and Steve, the ski resorts need to clean up there slopes come summer but if they ask for volunteers, sign up! You will be surprized at what you find.

Old Long Skis, that is privileged information and should not be shared. Code of honor.

For the record, I did not say that the ski resorts should clean up their slopes. I think that the people who use the slopes should clean up after themselves. The resort is not responsible for pigs, slobs and litterbugs. Lift ticket prices should not have to include extra money for people who cannot properly dispose of their garbage. Leave only tracks and take only memories. Still on 217cm skis…
