For me there has never really been any one election or issue that had the most impact. It’s been more of an evolution of awareness about how important it is to educate oneself before casting that vote.
In 1976, when I was 20 and voted for the Libertarian candidate for President (Clark) I was talking to a friend from Florida and she said she had voted for Jimmy Carter, simply because he was from the south like she was. I was appalled, but then again, I recalled that I had voted two years previously as a registered Democrat for Neil Abercrombie for his first elected position in the Hawaii state senate, simply because he was so different from every other candidate and wouldn’t that be fun?!? He wound up eventually being one of the biggest spenders EVER in Congress. And since he won that first election by only a few votes, I’ve always felt partially responsible for his career. I’m still ashamed of that and have tried to do better since by 1) learning about the issues, and 2) if I don’t know the candidate or the issue, I’ll leave it blank rather than make a stupid choice.
