Two 15-year-old boys have been ordered to pay $10,000 in restitution fines for starting the Ray May Fire.

The August fire burned 3,628 acres south of Gardnerville and caused more than $2.8 million in damage.

Earlier the judge had sentenced the teens to probation and ordered them to do 500 hours of fire-related community service.

I’m curious. Why the new fine? Realistically, 10K hardly touches the actual cost of the fire, but it’s real money to kids that age. Did they not do their community service? Is that why now they’re being ordered to pay? When you drive by the fire area, it’s quite frightening looking to realize how bad it could have been for nearby homes and livestock. I hope the kids have taken it seriously and learned from this.
