Free Bird awarded Lakeview Commons concessionaire, Regan Beach up in the air
By Kathryn Reed
One South Lake Tahoe beach concessionaire is locked in – Free Bird will be at Lakeview Commons.
These are the crepe people.
Lake Taco has been offered a deal to continue operating at Regan Beach, but owner Danny Chavez has told city officials he isn’t so sure he wants it because access to the beach will be encumbered this summer.
The day after the City Council tabled making a decision on who will be selling food, staff decided to reject all bids. This also eliminated the need for the May 18 special meeting that had been scheduled.
City Attorney Patrick Enright and Assistant City Manager Nancy Kerry met with Lake Tahoe News on May 18 to talk about what is likely to happen.
Because there were two ranking systems used by the three city staff members who evaluated the potential concessionaires, there were irregularities. That is why the top candidate from each set of criteria was chosen.
Staff, because no money is being expended and it’s a short-term contract, can make these decisions without council approval. The contracts are for this season only.
The plan is to send out a request for proposal in the fall to have a business or businesses on board for the following five summers.
Enright said Chavez has not signed the one-summer contract because new playground equipment will be installed at Regan Beach this summer and the parking lot will be used as a staging area for construction work in the Al Tahoe neighborhood after Labor Day.
Chavez is afraid it will not be a profitable endeavor, Enright said.
I didn’t read the name “Free Bird” in the line up that was previously given(Click on the link given in this article). Is “Free Bird” a new one?
Probably operating illegally. Surprise.
Isn’t the guy at Reagan Beach’s last name Chavez?
30 yr local,
what are you saying? does he not have the proper permits and business licenses?
this should be checked out… if the city was working with an unlicensed vendor heads should roll…
I understand the the “Lake Taco” concession has been a good one. Too bad that the city’s improvements to the beach will affect a private business. You’d think that they would have evaluated this before using the parking lot for storage.
Are we the worst generations of Americans?
Is it that America is crumbling under the weight of the “I hate America first generations”.
Does anyone care about standards of equality and fairness?
People ignore the most fundamental facts…
No one seems to realize or care that if you have different rules for different groups you get a divided and hateful society…
It’s called the New Age Movement PubWORKTV.
Free bird has been in south lake tahoe for a long time. They have their own great shop next to red hut!
I love that the city is involving the community in the use of that area rather then opening a concession stand powered by the city.
Kudos to Free bird & South Tahoe Stand Up Paddle Board!
pub works…please see the name you were asking the question of, it was not I that posted :).
Im excited for The Free Bird Cafe. The owners are very hard workers, have done alot for the community and have a quality product.
30yrlocal,
My mistake, I will be more careful next time.
I think Free Bird will be successful. They are for progress. Lots of bad ideas and attitudes have left town thankfully.
