Opinion: Fortier provides sweet dreams

To the community,

At 3am my muse shook me. She said, “Wake up.” I said, “Why? I’d rather sleep.” Again, she said, “Wake up. Claire’s leaving.”

“Claire, who?” I asked, still in semi-sleep.

“Look sleepy head, wake up, Claire Fortier, the mayor, is leaving,” my muse said.

Bill Crawford

“Oh,” I said, now awake.

So I asked, “Is this Fortier the same Fortier that filed as a candidate for the City Council in 2002?”

“Yes,” my muse replied.

“The same Fortier that after the ballot was printed and sent out dropped out of the race; screwing up the election with hundreds of votes that didn’t count?” I asked.

“You got it,” my muse said.

“Well, what about that?” I said.

“Yes, what about that?” my muse wondered out loud.

Then to myself I said – two out of two ain’t bad and went back to sleep — to sweet, sweet dreams.

When I brought up Ms. Fortier’s dropping out of the 2002 race when she first entered the ’10 race, and thus questioned her committment to see it through, Ms. Fortier’s and some of her supporters jumped on me!

I have no problem with her job on the Council or as Mayor. But just interesting, for whatever reason, it doesn’t look like Ms. Fortier will finish her term!

Bill, normally I find your articles a bit too far out. However, this time you nailed it. And, Parker, the attack dogs attack everything that doesn’t fit in with their ideas.

Our town’s people need to realize something. Claire has not made any decisions about leaving or not leaving. This is not about Claire deciding to quit her position early. This is about the fact that I have been offered a position in another state. And in that context, because I am being transferred, our personal question becomes when Claire will be joining me there. In that context, this person of high integrity and total commitment to our town’s issues researched confidentially what is in our town’s best interest should she decide that she wanted to relocate with her spouse earlier than later. Unfortunately, there are people who don’t understand the concept of “trust” and “confidentiality”. So our personal issue became a public debate.
Claire is committed to our town’s wellbeing.. She is up daily at 4 am to research whatever issue she is tasked with resolving. She does this not for herself, or any personal gain, but because she cares about our community.
For her to be castigated in this blog based upon gossip, rumors and innuendo is incomprehensible.
And that after years of service to our community, our private dilemma has become fodder for mean spirited public comment blows my mind, and saddens my heart.

Bill, don’t you have anything better to do with your time? Really?

    You know Ms. Pielaet,

Claire is in a public office, elected by the public. Whether she finishes her term is of concern to the citizens of SLT! But let me clearly state, I hope she serves out her term in office!
