Opinion: Tahoe should form its own county
To the community,
Mountain people don’t like to be told what to do or how to do it. Self-reliance and personal freedom are part of our DNA. It’s just how we roll.
In contrast, there are a lot of people living down the hill who regard Tahoe folks as living in “La La Land.” Unfortunately, these people have ultimate control over our lives in everything from what roads we can use to what sort of justice we will face. Instead of a jury of your peers, who are far more liberal up here, you’ll be dragged down the hill to face a jury of retired military conservatives who think people like you are what is wrong with this country. Good luck with that.
In short, we need to break away from El Dorado and Placer counties and form our own Lake Tahoe County. All those tax dollars that have been going down the hill will stay here instead.
No longer would our world-class resorts be saddled with Third World roads — or roads arbitrarily closed by El Dorado County. No longer would we be forced to waste time and gas to go over the hill to do our business or seek justice. No longer would we be slaves to people who neither respect nor understand us.
Lake Tahoe is a very special place, with very special people. We deserve our own county, run by people like us. We have far more in common with Tahoe City and Squaw Valley than Placerville or Auburn.
It is time to stand up for our rights and our unique lifestyles by forming our own county and taking back control of our own lives.
Steve Kubby, South Lake Tahoe
Most locals residents have trials in South Lake Tahoe so I don’t understand your complaint in that regard.
In the 80s there was a campaign to break from El Dorado County. However, the entire county voted – not just the part that wanted to form a new county – and it failed. That’s not to say that if you wanted to spearhead another try at a separate county you couldn’t be successful.
Please tell me your problem with “retired military” as both my boys are!
Honestly Steve, this city and it’s council, agendas, aren’t capable of running a county or city matter fact.
People keep giving them longer ropes and they keep hanging themselves. They still are throwing all their pennies(our taxes dollars) in the wrong pot ,hoping it turn to gold. All comes out is more expenditures that don’t even break even.
Too many people are just passing through this town and the people that do live here, don’t bother to vote cause they know whatever the residents would request goes in one ear, out the other ,only more time shares, large building seem to matter.
Lots of the founders that help shape this small community have sold out, left for better pastures of opportunity with easier ways to make a living, retirement, than the over shadowing of all the formalities, one has to put up with to live here,There’s some really desperate people in this town that can’t afford to live here in the first place, but can’t afford to leave either.
About the only real industry is charities being feed by large corporation, small fries write offs, that really do little to help.
Good idea, except that north shore folk have such a low opinion of South Tahoe that I doubt they would want to join the new county. They look at our local politicians and see a bunch of self serving scoundrels and dope smokers – and South Tahoe would be the population center of this new county. Dream on brother.
This would never work because like the Dakota’s the Carolina’s and Northern and Southern California the South shore, and North Shore along with the West Shore would never agree on anything. Both sides have their real estate clicks, ski resort clicks , pot smokers, and all the rest of us. Steve Kubby you didnt get elected because your a North Shore person. Those of us who are locals here live here because its a whole lot nicer and more normal than the other side of the lake….
It’s not just a matter of who will get along with each other, but it’s a matter of the money needed to run a country….repair roads and provide services. There are more homes that generate more tax dollars on the other slope and more businesses to generate more sales taxes and whatever else funds our county.
Granted, there are county funds that come to our agencies in town that could be better handled much differently, but would we have the employee base to competently work in all the levels needed?
The best way to make sure our side of the ridge gets attention and what it deserves is to participate and make sure we have a supervisor who represents our needs.
