Tahoe chambers to take road trip to see why other areas function better
Tourism, transportation and the environment will be among the topics explored during the Pathways to Prosperity Trek being organized by Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce in partnership with North Lake Tahoe Chamber of Commerce and the Tahoe Prosperity Center.
Basin business and civic leaders will travel by bus to Monterey Bay, Livermore and Sacramento in an effort to learn how other communities have succeeded in their quest for prosperity and environmental sustainability. The communities to be visited have faced similar challenges to those in the Lake Tahoe Basin, including moving a highway, sub-standard wages, high unemployment, environmental challenges and diverse populations with disparate interests.
The trip is June 5-7.
Space is limited. Reserve your space by calling (775) 588.1728. The cost is $650 per person. Deposit and registration are due May 24 with final payment due May 31. For those willing to share a room there is a $100 reduction in cost.
The reason other areas prosper and SLT doesn’t is because you are where you are because you follow who you follow…
It’s not rocket science, you should kick out your leaders and disband the government agencies that have lead you here.
Actually, Some of the leaders should probably go to prison. It is criminal what has been done to the good people of this region by the trash that has lead the city and county too.
If they haven’t figured it out by now, it won’t make any difference where they go to see the other green pastures,650 buys a few books to pass out to whom might be really interested!
Why bus, we got a pink elephant airport,to charter a plane put a little fat on the tires on take off ,landing.
Might learn something by just getting a bus called Grey Hound to return on a regular time Frame, but THIS FAMIOUS WORLD DESTATION ISN’T EVEN Profitable enough FOR THEM EITHER,BUT WE GOT A NICE NEW BUS STATION FOR THE FUTURE ,Parking garage with plenty open spaces.
WHO’S IDEAS THOUGHT THAT UP?
Why take a bus, why take a plane… they should just jump on pink elephants and travel in style. “Pathway to Prosperity” sounds magically enchanting.
One cannot help but wonder who has the spare time and money to do this.
I have to laugh at some posters (above) who belittle members of the chamber who are taking the initiative to broaden their horizon as it pertains to how they function. Seems that to some people you are damned if you do, and damned if you don’t! Just proves that some just enjoy bitching about everything instead of trying to contribute.
Forgot to add that this excursion isn’t costing any of us a dime! So please try and explain to me why it is not a good idea!
It’s not rocket science, you should kick out your leaders and disband the government agencies that have lead you here. As I remember this has all been done before and we keep asking the same questions so let the Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce in partnership with North Lake Tahoe Chamber of Commerce and the Tahoe Prosperity Center meet and come up with the same answers Mr. biggerpicture!
Me, so your answer is to go and hide and do nothing? Ignore the issues and they will fix themselves? At least, unlike you, someone is trying to make a difference. And why do you make the assumption of my gender? You know what they say about assuming, don’t you?
Me,
What do you mean “it has all been done before”
the people who concocted the silly Prosperity Plan are the same people that have lead the community off the cliff …
they are the same people that are leading the community now… further into the abyss.
Frankly “Me” You don’t seem to know what you are talking about.
Smart people have been point out that the community and the State of California itself was heading down the wrong path for decades. Now the obvious, often predicted results are at hand.
The leaders today are still the same WRONG types of leaders that brought you down. The people that created the leadership forums, LTVA ( they gave you – Tahoe South… and poor results) and groups like SEDCorp and the Chambers of Commerce of today (which are nothing like the Chambers of Commerce 30 years ago) Today Chambers are bellying up to the tax trough … the bailout mentality of todays so called leaders… the fall will be very hard.
Government, and its minions are the problem – not the solution – get use to it, South Lake Tahoe is Toast.
The only hope is that the rest of the country will watch and learn from the devastation that California has brought on itself.
Watch learn and turn back to freedom.
…and yes, I’ve said it before, SLT is the poster child of everything that is wrong about California.
Point of fact, Pub Works: please do not group all Chambers of Commerce into one category. The South Tahoe Chamber of Commerce, actually located IN the City of South Lake Tahoe, California, is operated totally by volunteers. We are all small business owners who do our best to represent the interests of the business owners and residents of this community, and we do it without any financial compensation.
Let’s look forward to the day when other places will see their way clear to visit Tahoe under the premise that they would love to see how well we’ve learned how to function successfully. . .what a concept !
That in itself would perhaps be a visitor-based experience that could then result in a ‘word-of-mouth’ growth period – which if recollection serves was what built Tahoe business in the past. . .
In the 60’s, a S.F. bus tour was organized in the Financial District to take people on tour to the Haight-Ashbury district to see the “hippies”; the “hippies” then organized their own bus to take tours of the Financial District to have a vantage point on all those busy people carrying briefcases and wearing proverbial ‘gray-flannel suits’- I don’t think either of them cost $ 650.00 though, so a junket like this is probably more of a social affair, unless policy & decision makers are on board.
Heather Fargo, former Mayor of Sacramento, now head of CA’s Strategic Growth Council, spoke just the other day in Tahoe on Tahoe’s need to “have someone who understands smart growth”, so perhaps those who indulge themselves in taking this tour may try to get some insight on what she may have meant by that. . . isn’t TRPA’s Regional Plan Update to do this for us ??
As was said before, “Sometimes you don’t have to look so far forward, you just have to look around”. . .
Sorry for assuming biggerpicture no disrespect was meant. Sometimes I get tired of more meeting with the same answers!
Learning from communities that have overcome similar problems sounds like a great way to move forward (and avoiding hard-lessons/bad outcomes). Sounds like a quick trip though. Hope you bring back new insight to share.
Just knowing which cities can be seen as models for recovery and advancement is a great start.
Jenny, How MANY CITIES DOWN THERE HAVE TO DEAL WITH THE trpa, forest service, conversation,Coucil,Chamber full ear wax, caltrans, the coast guard, codes enforement, drunk tourist in the neighborhood, all at the same time?
I would say we should be the pros for the cities down there.
What you think?
You cannot change the problems you face today with the same types of minds that created the problems in the first place.
You need better people with a better understanding of freedom and free markets to even start addressing the changes that are needed.
You also need people to be aware of the scope of the problems, especially the government pension and retirement programs, and you just don’t have much of that.
Yesterdays “flower children” are todays bloomin idiots…
As Europe collapses the world will start to realize just how bad we have let things get…
From where I sit, you cannot say you haven’t been warned. For decades.
PubWorksTV:
There are a minimum of two City Councilmember seats up for grabs this November. Start campaigning and share with the community how you’re going to fix the City’s problems. Be a part of the future solution versus just criticizing the past.
How many of the participants on this social outing are government bureaucrats, or semi-government, agency, or similar employees? Boondoggles like this are not well tolerated by taxpayers these days. Especially when false cries of budget crisis, raising taxes, and slashing schools, the courts, and public safety are thrown around as threats to keep their bloated budgets and engorged pensions intact.
