Students being taught with public money that Loch Ness Monster is real

By Valerie Strauss, Washington Post

This would be funny if it weren’t so, well, not funny.

A biology textbook used by a Christian school in Louisiana that will be accepting students with publicly funded vouchers in the fall says that the Loch Ness Monster in Scotland is real. And it isn’t just any monster but a dinosaur — an effort to debunk evolution and bolster creationist theory.

The story, reported in the Scotsman newspaper in Scotland, says that Eternity Christian Academy in Westlake is one of the many Christian schools in the United States that uses these books published by Accelerated Christian Education.

The Biology 1099 edition includes a passage about the Loch Ness Monster that says, in part, according to the newspaper:

“Are dinosaurs alive today? Scientists are becoming more convinced of their existence. Have you heard of the ‘Loch Ness Monster’ in Scotland? ‘Nessie’ for short has been recorded on sonar from a small submarine, described by eyewitnesses, and photographed by others. Nessie appears to be a plesiosaur.”

Marie Carrier, principal of Eternity Christian Academy, was quoted by the New York Daily News as saying that she would like to accept 135 voucher students for next year to join the 38 children already attending the school in grades 1 through 8.

The reason all of this matters now to the public is that Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal recently signed a law that sets up the largest voucher program of any state in the country. Some 125 private and religious schools from across the state are qualified to participate in the Louisiana Believes program, which gives families public money to pay school tuition for their children.

Incredible that talibornagain Xtians in the 21st century believe the King James Bible to be the “word of god”. This is a book edited in the 17th century from 16th century translations of 8,000 contradictory copies of 4th century scrolls that claim to be copies of lost letters written in the 1st century. If you want to believe cultish nonsense for rubes you go right ahead but leave the rest of us out of it.

For any who may easily be misled by Mojo,

A few commentaries on the evidence of Biblical manuscript evidence.

John Lea, The Greatest Book in the World
“With perhaps a dozen or 20 exceptions, the text of every verse in the New Testament may be said to be so far settled by general consent of scholars, that any dispute as to its readings must relate rather to the interpretation of the words than to any doubts respecting the words themselves…”

Sir Frederick Kenyon, the Director of the British Museum, said:

“the last foundation or any doubt that the scriptures have come down to us as they were written has been removed.”

“In the entire range of ancient Greek and Latin literature, the Iliad ranks next to the New Testament in possessing the greatest amount of manuscript testimony.”

Homer (Iliad) – Written 900 BC – Earliest copy 400 BC – Gap 500 years – Number of copies 643

    New Testament – Written 40 – 100 AD – Earliest copy 125 AD – Gap 25 years – Number of copies over 24,000

“. . . the textual critic of the New Testament is embarrassed by the wealth of his material.” Bruce Metzger

It is interesting to see “Christians” gloating over their perception that someone else will be left out by God. I doubt that you speak for the God you describe or that you know who God will leave out. I pray that all of God’s children will get to come home.

Yo Dumb if you read the Scriptures and understood the Power of GOD and the Forgivness of Sins

Do you attend the Unity Church?

if you would like to talk about it over a cup of coffee call me

    Dan,

With all due respect to your beliefs in the meaning and history of the New Testament, you are incorrect. There is a great deal of academic thought on the history, the translation and the meaning of the words in the New Testament. Having spent 4 years in the study of Early Christianity and Judaism in the time of Jesus (both upper division BA and Master’s coursework at a prestigious university overseas), I would l have been happy had there been agreement on these issues as I would have had to take only one class and passed with flying colors. That is why new translations take a long time to complete if they are to be true to what we perceive the original to be. Anything we have today is uses translations from the Greek and latin that were themselves translations of words that were spoken in Hebrew or Aramaic. It is certain that some Gospels were taken from the same source (a source that was not included when the book was canonized and is lost to us) and there is academic discussion as to the dating of the writings. You use as your sources, two British sources, both hardly unbiased. One is late 19th century (or early 20th) and one early 20th (1923). Biblical scholarship has come a long way since then. I respect your beliefs, but don’t confuse it with historical facts. You may want to read more about the concept of the “Leap of Faith” by Kierkegaard.

yo MoJo you can have 1 of my bikes when they spred my ashes over at my favorite fishing hole

in a sermon years ago I herd this statment ” axe to grind ”

do you think that fits you?

Lisa you left out the Holy Spirit and how he is at work in the world today and everyday

when I took a theology class in college
the Professor said some strange things?

but I thought he had an axe to grind

  11. Lisa says - Posted: June 30, 2012

Chief…I didn’t take one class, but probably 10 – 15 and the professors were from all walks of life, Catholic priests (yes more than one), former priests, ministers, atheists (probably but not sure),Jews and many were world renown in the field (don’t have a clue how I qualified for the program!). Belief in the Holy Spirit is also a Leap of Faith. Doesn’t mean it is or is not true, but it does take that leap. Kierkegaard was a fervent believer.

lisa all of your secular knowledge does not seem to have given you any Spirtual awakening

if you had, then you would know that GOD would not allow his word to be changed

as far as the Loch Ness Monster he is like Bigfoot Maybe?

  13. Biggerpicture says - Posted: July 1, 2012

“then you would know that GOD would not allow his word to be changed”

How can one know something that lacks any tangible proof (and can feel not one inkling of truth of it) within ones heart? And if one feels no “spiritual awakening” should we just take yours and others word for it because you “know”? I would never tell another what to believe so please refrain from trying to persuade me.

have you ever wondered why they invented Zanex?

it is to fill the hole in your Sole
the other option is to have the Power of GOD and the Forgiveness of Sins to fill that hole
