2 men arrested in Douglas County on gun charges

Two Vallejo residents were arrested Friday on weapons charges.

A resident in the 3700 block of Highway 50, which is about halfway between Spooner Summit and Carson Valley, reported hearing several rounds fired from a firearm. The resident also told Douglas County sheriff’s deputies she heard a couple noises outside the home which indicated bullets may have struck the house or ricocheted nearby.

At about 1:20 on July 20 deputies found two men had been shooting rifles, a third had been shooting a pellet gun, and the fourth had not been firing.

Deputies said the suspects had been shooting at trees and did not have a safe backdrop area behind their target; therefore several of the bullets that were discharged from the rifles continued into the nearby rural residential area.

The two males who had been shooting the rifles, 21-year-old Lance Caro and 20-year-old Daniel Dauz, were arrested on charges of discharging a firearm where a person might be endangered; a gross misdemeanor carrying a sentence of up to one year in jail. They were additionally charged with misdemeanor destruction of property.

The rifles used by Caro and Dauz, both medium caliber bolt-action rifles, were collected and booked as evidence.

I’m a gun enthusiast and I frequent the Carson public range. These guys should be heavily fined, serve some jail time, and be banned from handling firearms until they grow up! Oh, and a mandatory gun safety program – like 4 days at Front Sight – would make sense. Only by luck did no one get killed!

These are the same kind of people that ALWAYS leave their shell casings littered all over the area they are shooting in! And I must say, they do not reflect well on other upstanding gun owners!

Yeah… those people are certifiable dumb-dumbs. Choosing a safe place to shoot requires basic common sense. It isn’t that hard to find a 40ft tall barren hillside to put your target in front of around here. No gun for you! 10 year!

They should have just gone to the range in Carson, or in Douglas County. I prefer Douglas County, its closer, less evidence of yahoos shooting trash cans, the cross wind is fun.
I’ve met more cool people at the Douglas range. I have shot lots of guns that weren’t mine, XD 40 compact, SW 1911, a 22 older than i am, and a muzzle loading .50 cal (the best).

Owning a gun is a serious responsibility. These two should not have a gun of any kind for a long time; they are lucky their reckless behavior did not hurt or kill someone. They are also lucky the homeowner did not shoot back!
