Snow Globe is done. You’ll be spending the $500,000 on lawsuits if it comes again.

During workshops and and JPA board meetings that resulted in crafting Measure R, there was clear consensus that the money should be spent on fields that are best able attract bigger tournments thus benefiting the SLT economy. Of course, improving these fileds will also benefit any local teams as well, but bringing economic benefit to our financially struggling economy needs to be the primary consideration in how and where this money is spent.

Is it wise to spend any money until there is a new leader over at Parks and Rec? The Parks and Rec. Director was also in charge of streets, fleet managment and facilities. Facilities includes parks, fields and sidewalks/bike paths.

The following quote from the article titled ‘Carson City economy growing with sports tourism’ (posted on 7-30 in Outdoor & Sports) pretty much says it all. The Measure R ball fields committee needs to stop the in-fighting and just concentrate on determining which field(s)are best suited to hosting tournments so we can start upgrades this fall with the $500K. If they can’t get the job done, the JPA Board needs to take charge of the situation and use the input they’ve received to make a decision so that we’ll be in better shape to attract more tournaments next year. Why is it always “next year” or “in 5 or 10 years” with this town?? With an estimated 18% unemployment and crumbling streets, we don’t have the luxury of continuing down this pot-holed road of redundant studies, endless planning and squabbling over pet preferences. It’s time to put on our big boy/girl pants and GET THINGS DONE!
“The economic impact from visitors to both youth and adults sports tournaments is spread across several business segments. Food and beverage sales garnered the lion’s share, with $7.78 million in sales in 2011, followed by entertainment and retail at $5.07 million, and lodging at $2.37 million.
Room tax collections attributed to sports tourism amounted to over $273,000 dollars, and a sales tax boost of more than $961,000. The cumulative numbers from 2005 through 2011 include total economic impact of $77.58 million, room tax collections of $1.49 million, and Carson City sales tax share of $1.45 million (2.18 percent of the 7.475 percent sales tax.”
