Recreation board to decide how to spend money
South Lake Tahoe Recreation Facilities Joint Powers Authority at its July 27 9am meeting at Lake Tahoe Airport will be presented with ideas about how to spend money to improve bike trails and fields within its jurisdiction.
The three-member board could take action that morning or defer a decision.
It is being recommended that new planks for the two bike bridges in South Lake Tahoe be replaced and that the softball field at South Tahoe High School be completed.
Plank replacement might be huge for challenged bikers and increased pedestrian safety. Softball field at SLT HS looks impressive. Hopefully the field is maintained to sufficient levels to prevent unpredictable bounces. Unpredictable bounces are a sore safety issue at other city softball fields in prior years and most likely still.
The planks on the two bridges were recently flipped over to expose the smoother underside as the “new” riding surface in place of the badly worn, washboard-like previously exposed surface. While still somewhat bumpy…this represents a vast improvement and a very cost effective (if stop-gap) solution. What REALLY needs attention is the section behind Push gym which has HUGE cracks and chunks of asphalt breaking away almost daily. This is quite literally an accident waiting to happen and a very real liability issue for the city. I know that a CalTrans grant has been applied for….AGAIN…for the third time. This time, matching funds from Measure R have been added with hopes that will be the factor that helps us get this grant to repair this and other sections like behind Meeks which is also in very bad shape due to its’ location ‘below grade’ making it suceptible to flooding.
As previously mentioned, ANY money going to fileds must have attracting tournaments as its’ primary goal.
