High speed Internet has finally come to Alpine County and parts of Douglas County outside of the Lake Tahoe Basin.

FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski was in the area June 30 to recognize Frontier Communications’ efforts to expand broadband service to this sparsely populated area.

The cable company is partnering with NBCUniversal to broadcast the Olympics to mobile devices using broadband Internet.

Also on hand for the launch was Frontier Chairwoman Maggie Wilderotter.

The new service area is more than 700 square miles.
