It is quite a goal to want to host an international event. Public transit, infrastructure such as roads, bicycle paths, walkways, ect(at least on south shore)…. need some serious attention. Maybe even beefing up the building codes to require all buildings be evaluated for reducing smog in the air that everybody else is forced to breath. Unfortunately for south shore, places like, Donner Lake, Kirkwood, Northstar might get more attention for an international venue.

Given the reaction to Snow Globe and the article below about trash and cigarette butts at the Commons, it is apparent that Tahoe could not handle the stress that an Olympics would cause, IMHO.

Hey, there you go! A good use for the “hole” – would make a nice Olympic sized pool, don’t you think? If Tahoe can’t manage the hole, how on earth do you think they could manage an Olympics???

You all know what the traffic is like in summer with all the tourons in town. Now imagine that doubled, trebled or more-and in the winter! There are probably a lot more things I haven’t even thought of yet.
I, for one, will leave town for the duration if the Olympics come to Tahoe.

I believe it would be devastating. The basin is groaning under the current load of tourists. It — and we — couldn’t handle the summer Olympics.
It’s important to realize that the impact is not limited to the weeks the Olympics are happening. Preparations, building projects, road projects, etc. wreak havoc on the host community for years ahead of the event. It’s very expensive, too. Plus, the community is left with structures it is unlikely to be able to use to advantage.
I think it would be a money pit, an environmental nightmare, and completely not worth it. If we can’t run an airport, how are we supposed to manage the summer Olympics???

Tahoe could not handle a summer olympic event, at least on the So. Shore. Look how bad the traffic gets on a holiday weekend. It would be gridlock big time. Not enough parking, not enough motel rooms, even our campgrounds are booked up on any given weekend. We simply don’t have the infrastructure to handle the large crowds that would come.
Sorry to sound so negative but we have to accept So. Shore for what it is, a nice little town to live in with a beautiful lake. No way could we accomodate millions of people with the way things are in this town.

The vote is in, and I agree. It would be an impossible traffic jam, residents would be uprooted or become prisoners in their own homes, with no way to get out to live their normal lives, work at their jobs, etc.. The city wouldn’t be able to handle the overload of people. We’re not ready for this and never will be. Our one main highway through town, like Tahoe City, is too tight a corridor. The 1960’s Olympics at Squaw was “simple” compared to the huge masses that would arrive to attend added winter attractions invented to appeal to them. Many new facilities would have to be built ……on what land? Not in MY backyard! Just think about winter conditions here, with snow plows doing their thing and everyone else maneuvering around them and the tourists and athletes, who would, of course, have to be handled by an efficient transit system. Just note how London suffered, and the athletes who arrived and the traffic problems they had. I wonder what the after-affects will be? Sorry to be so negative, as I am usually a positive-leaning person.

Okay, I’ve got a tri-tip on the BBQ and some fresh veggies from the garden wrapped in foil with a litle butter, grillin’ away this hot afternoon on So. Shore. Tonight it’s Neil Young and Crazy Horse on the outside stage and we have goooood seats with fine friends! (Thank you Cindy!!) Can life get any better?
I won’t apologize for my occasional hedonistic splurges. You only live once.
