The South Lake Tahoe Police Department is warning people of a scam to access retiree’s financial information.

A person falsely presents himself as a representative from the local gas company and offers to set up an appointment to review the customer’s financial records. The representative claims they can lower the gas bill if they can review the financial documents.

The public should know Southwest Gas will never send anyone out to review personal financial information. Anyone receiving a phone call of this nature should not give any information. They should contact the police department.

If someone arrives at your residence asking for personal information, call the police immediately at (530) 542.6100.

Sad. At first glance one wonders how anybody could be so naive as to fall for such a thing. And how those greedy crooks can victimize someone who could be their own grandmother. . . but it is happening more and more. The technological world is moving faster than our parents can deal with and they are intimidated by it. Won’t be too long before those shoes fit US. Look out for your parents and your elderly neighbors. Someday somebody might have to be looking out for you.

NO legitimate company or government agency would do what the people above have done. That being said, 50% of the data breaches are still hard copy – meaning people to whom you have given your info over the years are tossing it in the dumpster, unshredded.I wish more people would educate themselves on identity theft and fraud. Great book available at ftc.gov called Avoid, Detect, Deter. Free.
