Tahoe resorts not well regarded by Ski magazine readers

image_pdfimage_print

Not one Lake Tahoe area ski resort made it into the top 10 of Ski magazine’s annual reader survey.

Mammoth – while not Tahoe – is the only California resort to make it in the top 20. It came in at No. 18.

The Tahoe resorts making the top 30 are Northstar at 27, Heavenly Mountain Resort at 28, and Squaw Valley at 29.

The top resort this year is Whistler Blackcomb in British Columbia – home of the 2010 Winter Olympics.

No Tahoe resort made it into the top five of the subcategories. Those were nightlife, go big or go home, top chefs, powder,

The top 10 California-Nevada resorts are:

• Mammoth

• Northstar

• Heavenly

• Squaw Valley

• Sugar Bowl

• Mt. Rose

• Alpine Meadow

• Kirkwood

• Homewood

• Sierra-at-Tahoe.

To bad there wasn’t a section in the magazine for graffiti. Consolation, Lake Tahoe vicinity took a clean sweep for Ca./Nv.

So sad how much damage has been done to Tahoe by the overreaching liberal government, it has become an over priced vacation ghetto just like people have been saying it would.

With all the debt and the big government control it will get worse. South lake Tahoe especially.

Yet the same people that brought on the mess are still running around promoting the Tahoe Prosperity Plan. What a joke.

No one that actually skis reads Ski magazine. People who use “holliday” as a verb read Ski magazine. I suppose that’s the type of person all those fancy hotels are aimed at. Maybe we should have put in reasonably priced hotels and some good pubs.

I am an avid expert skier and I read Ski Mag. I don’t participate in their surveys. I don’t care how our local resorts rate, maybe lower ratings equal less skiers and we can continue to enjoy fantastic skiing on uncrowded slopes. (I don’t mean Heavenly)

I read Ski and Skiing magazines as a kid. Both good, looked forward to every issue.
When I was on the high school ski team we would get on the school bus and off we’d go to Mammoth, Mt. Rose or wherever for a race. Lottsa fun!
I always thought Heavenly Valley was the best compared to the other places. Although I am a bit biased, as I started Skiing at Heavenly in 1962, so it was always my home slope.
Don’t pay attention to these stupid ratings of ski areas… Tahoe rules!!!

I’d like to point out that Tahoe now has some of the best season pass prices around. You can’t justify saying that Tahoe is overpriced. Resorts outside this area, such as Oregon, have season passes that START in the upper $800/$900 for a pass with blackout dates. And that’s just for one resort!!!

I’d like to point out that Tahoe is still one of the best ski resort places for the locals, even if Vail is buying up all the good ski hills. Passes are more affordable then ever!

West shore, when you write “even if Vail is buying up…” try writing, “with Vail bailing out failing ski hills and improving them…” If I am wrong, please explain where. Kirkwood was on the way to the courthouse steps. So was Heavenly, again, until Vail showed up.

What I always hear is that Vail is evil and they take all the fun out of everything but John and West Shore local are right. Who would have bailed out Kirkwood and Heavenly if they did not? Who has kept passes affordable for the whole family. I have been able to get passes for my family of 5 and we can do something together 10 weekends a year. We pack a lunch to make it affordable. Some of you want all the best but are not willing to pay for it and are the first to criticize when it is not to your liking. Grow up, pay up and stand up!!

Rhino, what you are hearing is just the blather about how all corporations are evil, and Vail is a corporation, ergo, Vail is evil. You have noticed what I have noticed; season passes are a good price, the mountain has never looked better, snowmaking is awsome: but they are an evil corporation.
