Then and now: Gas stations disappear through the years

Remember the “50 South Shore gas stations”?

The intersection of Highway 50 and Lodi Avenue had three of them.

The Union 76 station was replaced by today’s parking for Magic Carpet mini-golf, and the Standard station was replaced by an office building.

A third station still operates.

It would be great to see more of these great old gas station photos, is there a collection of them somewhere?

It would be nice to go back to a day when this town did not care so much about money and cared more about getting away from the rat race and being a very cool little town where there was peace!!!!

Does anyone remember the Texaco Star and Bar? I think it was at the corner of 50 and Sierra Blvd. That place has been thru many changes over the years. I was glad to see the new owners put so much work into the place sprucing it up…Blue Dog Pizza, I think.
I wish gas prices now were like they like they were back in those days of the early 60’s!
Thanks for the photos Bill, Old Long Skiis

Did you know that you can look at the old through Google Earth? Go to Google Earth, type in where you want to look and click on the little clock “view historical imagery” …not everything is clear from the old as they just have really old views, but very cool!

Thanks for sharing the old pictures Bill.

I remember changing my water pump in my (then new) Landcruiser at the station where the Transit center is now during a full-on snowstorm in 1974! Can’t remember what kind of station it was. They let me use what little cover there was because there was almost no traffic that night. Thanks for the photos you guys!

    Hi, Chief Slowroller,

From my first oldies photo contribution last July came this response and helpful link:

“Jeff Lincoln says: July 22, 2012 at 12:10 pm http://www.MapofTahoe.com at its Cave Rock link has
a picture of Manny’s old diner and he had
    a gas station next door.”

Also, check this fabulous collection posted by Anita Quilici:

Were these businesses closed due to economics or TRPA influence?

I now believe the old Star and Bar Texaco is where Ducks on the lake is now. Thanks for the pictures! Hi Anita.
