Timber Cove Lodge gets new name, to be renovated

image_pdfimage_print

There is one less Best Western in South Lake Tahoe.

What was the Timber Cove Lodge is no longer affiliated with Best Western, and it has a new name. As of Dec. 1, it is the Beach Retreat & Lodge at Tahoe.

The changes are part of the new ownership. Urbana Holdings based in Georgia acquired the property, which include the Timber Cove Pier, after the trustees of the estate of longtime owner Bob Maloff sold the property after Maloff died in 2011.

The first attempt at rebranding the restaurant site on the pier failed. Bistro on the Pier is gone and in its place is Boathouse Restaurant on the Pier.

What was Mama’s Red Tomato restaurant in the front of the hotel along Highway 50 will be Kitchen 3411. That is expected to open by the end of the year.

In 2013, the 262 rooms and lobby will be remodeled, and meeting space added.

Sounds like a very poor name.

  2. Bob says - Posted: December 3, 2012

No matter what you call the restaurant’s if the food isn’t good and consistent you’re out of business. Good luck.

I’m with you Steve, doesn’t sound like a very marketable name that people remember. Sounds more like a place for groups and other retreats.

Urbana? What are the real names of the people that own this corp.

  5. Dick Fox says - Posted: December 3, 2012

Urbana Holdings is obviously a private equity firm similar to the infamous Bain Capital. They used to be called leveraged buyouts until that name was disgraced. Same deal though. Borrow tons of money to buy a company, pay yourselves and your investors outrageous sums while supposedly improving the property, cut wages and any other operating costs, declare bankruptcy and award huge bonuses to upper management on the way out and let somebody else be responsible for the loans. Employee pension/health care funds that are company assets can be seized but by then the thieves have moved on to “harvest” their next victim.

Dick, Urbana is a property managment company. The rest you just made up in your very little mind.

John, Pull your head out of your rush and face up to the failure of reaganomics. These are not “mergers and acquisitions” deals, this is a ruthless, soulless business model that always ends the same. It may take several years but the properties always “manage” to lose all their value in the end.

John,I feel comfortable posting here under a pseudonym because anything I post is an opinion that anyone can feel free to dispute.

It strikes me that disputing facts requires some documentation or, at minimum, a name to stand behind them.

I’ve got to agree with Dick, in general, given I don’t know about Urbana. However, if you want to look for evidence at Tahoe, just look to the Tahoe Keys Marina. This is a perfect example of what Dick is describing. New owners, NO IMPROVEMENTS, hideous service, leaking pump out lines, bleeding the place dry. Why isn’t the TRPA all over them? If they are honestly trying to run a marina, what a joke.

Another bone I have to pick in this regard: If the Chamber is awarding “best Marina” to these jerks, all it accomplishes is demeaning the other business’ which work so hard to provide excellent service.

  10. John says - Posted: December 4, 2012

Dave, let me get this straight: You dont like the Keys Marina so the story the voices in Dick’s head are telling is true? Shouldn’t Dick have some responsibility to provide evidence for an extraordinary claim? Isnt his statement slander?

WOW – Way to welcome someone to the area everyone! Would rather have the place sit empty? If the name is so bad, what great idea’s do you have or are we just pointing fingers…

Personally, I wish them all the luck, hope they are ultra successful and would hope the community can do better than this to support them.

Urbana Holdings is a leveraged buyout company and proud of it. They spell it out in their “all perfectly legal” company profile statement. The CEO of Urbana, Mr. Gutierrez, is a veteran “private equity” guy who left Songy Partners LLC after numerous deals went to foreclosure. No problem. He made his $$$ off these deals no matter what happens to the properties. Now he has put all those bad deals behind him and started a new venture.. new name… same game. I hope for the best for the Timber Cove property and employees but I’m not confident this business model has any interest in the long-term success of this property. And if this is slander then feel free to sue me.

I agree with BOONE – as a 22 year local, I am ASHAMED at the bad Tahoe attitude that is being expressed toward the good folks trying to make something work here. Where is the goodwill that should be being expressed? Is this the best we Tahoe locals can express? Maybe some of you have been on the mountain top way too long. I know that we here in this town are better than all this negativity.
Personally, I wish them all the best and will support them with my business.

Wow, a real estate company went through hard financial times during the greatest economic meltdown since the great depression. Shocking! But they pulled it out and remained viable and are now growing their business again. Yes, what despots! More shocking, they use debt to purchase buildings. The moral bankruptcy involved in that: owe wait, every homeowner in the U.S. uses debt to purchase real estate. Maybe thats common….

  15. 30yrlocal says - Posted: December 4, 2012

You guys are right….welcome to Lake Tahoe and I wish you the best success! It will be nice to see a thriving business in that location, with great restaurants. I use that beach all the time so am excited to see something work well. I shouldn’t have said anything about a name :). Have a great day everyone!

  16. Dick Fox says - Posted: December 4, 2012

Urbana Holdings didn’t pull anything out to remain viable. This is a spin-off company that leaves it’s previous debt and failure behind to reorganize as a new entity that takes no responsibility for any past deals. They have it set up so others are now responsible for any debts. Individual homeowners suffer consequences if their loans go bad, these LLC’s do not. Moral bankruptcy is someone with econ. degrees that defends this sleazy corporate theft.

  17. Dick Fox says - Posted: December 4, 2012

I’m done with this. We’ll see several yrs. down the road who’s correct about this deal. Arguing with someone that still believes that the trickle down wealth from the 1%ers is right around the corner after 30+ yrs. of supply side failure is pointless. They are Not the job creators. A strong middle class with decent wage jobs and money to spend create economic growth.

There are very few (VERY FEW) private individuals who have the wherewithall to invest in this kind of a property. And our town survives on these properties and the people who frequent them.
Without corporations, there would be no hotels, few restaurants, ski areas, supermarkets, movie theaters, or so many of the things that we all enjoy in life. Yeah, there are some doggoned greedy corporations out there. But compared to your average politician, I’ll take the corporation any day of the week.
Folks who slam corporations just on principal aren’t thinking it through. Government can’t do everything for you, ya know.

“But compared to your average politician, I’ll take the corporation any day of the week.”

No one told you that corporations control all of the politicians?

  20. Hang Ups From Way Back says - Posted: December 4, 2012

Pretty simple ,corps own lobbyist, lobbyist own Washington,Washington owns the American people.

There’s few things in between for anything else.

You never really own anything, you pay taxes or you lose it.

    Lease a life.

Is this what is called arguing a point from both sides?

  22. TeaTotal says - Posted: December 4, 2012

It takes a well honed teabagger mindset to be able to be Wrong from all sides of everything. I salute your unequalled expertise.

  23. John says - Posted: December 4, 2012

I agree with TeaTotal, corporations like the League to Save Lake Tahoe, Sierra Club, Center for Biological Diversity and oh heck, why not, the Red Cross are the source of social ills. In fact think about the bad things the corporation Planned Parenthood does. Oh wait…darn maybe…maybe we have to evaluate each corporation based on its actions…just like a….a…person?

  24. John says - Posted: December 4, 2012

But Thing Fish is right, corporations own the politicians. Just look at how President Romney bought the election with….oh there I go again…well it seems voters are not easily purchased actually. Sheldon Adelson got exactly nothing for the millions he poured into Republican politics. Not one single seat, not the president not a senator.

  25. thing fish says - Posted: December 4, 2012

Oh you silly goose. Your vote for the president doesn’t really mean anything. And even if your votes did matter they won’t do what you or the majority of people want them to anyway.
    Tee hee-hee. *giggle-snort*

Adelson didn’t do it right. You can’t just blatantly throw money at politicians that way, it’s too public and calls too much attention to the system.
