El Dorado County Superintendent of Schools Vicki Barber plans to retire effective June 30.

Barber, who was first elected county superintendent of schools in 1994, was re-elected for four additional terms. She started with the El Dorado County Office of Education in July 1983 as the director of Special Education, was promoted to assistant superintendent in 1984 and became deputy superintendent in 1990.

“We are extremely fortunate to have such exceptional schools that deliver quality education throughout the county. I am so appreciative of the support that public education has received in this county and have deep gratitude for the dedicated and passionate educators who deliver such outstanding service to our students and families every day,” Barber said in a statement.

The county board of education has appointed Deputy Superintendent Jeremy Meyers to fill the remainder of the term that expires in 2014. There will be primary election in June 2014 and, if needed, a run off the following November.

Just curious; Why do so many elected officials resign before their terms are up? I mean, if you don’t intend to finish the job, why apply? Doesn’t a contract mean anything anymore?

Great question. I’d like to know too. Maybe they resign before something unsavory comes out?

This is a redundant, unnecessary position that does not need to be refilled. Same goes for the entire department.
