Icy temps have caused Emerald Bay to freeze

image_pdfimage_print

South Tahoe has had overnight lows of below zero for several days.

Twenty years ago, in January 1993, we hit minus 28 degrees in South Tahoe. Emerald Bay froze over. That occurred also in February 1989 at minus 29.

At such temperatures, many frozen pipes and subsequent water damage wouldn’t be realized until those cracked pipes thawed, sometimes many days later and then flooding homes.

The least cold January since 1969 was last year’s January at 9 degrees.

KAE Having fond memories of serving on the 92/93 Grand Jury, i have no recall of the -28 degrees. Possibly due to the heat in Pville and SLT caused by that GJ.

I have the color front page tribune shot from Feb 9th, 1989. Much more ice then the above photos.

    The caption reads:

a MANTLE of ice covered Emerald bay Wednesday all the way to the mouth, as a result of the arctic air that clamped a deep freeze over Tahoe this week. Although ice sheets usually can be seen on the bay during cold spells, this could be it’s first complete surface freeze since the heavy winter of 1951-52.

I’ve seen Emerald Bay frozen over once many years ago. Not sure what year it was as my recollection of things in that time period are a bit hazy, occasionaly coming back to me as if in a faded memory. Maybye 1969 or 70?
The ice was thick enough that my friend Chris walked out onto the frozen bay. We all were yelling at him to come back to shore. Crazy times indeed. Somewhere around here I’ve got pictures of the frozen bay. Old Long Skiis
