Man shoots himself in middle of street in S. Tahoe
Updated Jan. 6 6:55am:
One person is dead in South Lake Tahoe from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Shots rang out behind the Jack-in-the-Box north of Highway 50 at about 9:30pm Saturday after a fight between unknown persons erupted at an apartment complex near the streets of Rubicon, Brockway and Sussex.
South Lake Tahoe police Chief Brian Uhler told Lake Tahoe News that one man used a handgun to kill himself in the middle of the street and that the other was not wounded.
The incident is described as a “neighborhood dispute” between two men. The surviving individual told officers he went to his neighbor’s to a talk about a damaged vehicle. The man ran after his neighbor pointed a revolver at him. At least one shot was fired.
The suspect fled the scene on foot; returning not much later to the middle of Rubicon Trail as officers were setting up a perimeter and searching for him. Officers said the man shot himself in the head.
The identity of the deceased has not been released pending notification of family.

I have heard gunfire more than once in this/my area. Two people died this week and lots of incidents this year in what I thought was a nice, safe neighborhood.
Live right there. We were trying to figure out how it happened. Shots fired, then police presence…
This happend right outside of my building, This just makes me want to move from this neighborhood.
CrimeReports.com, HomeFacts.com, spend awhile on both sites to hopefully get a fact based analysis of certain vicinities. Most likely some other databases on the web that are as good or better.
It’s not that great of a neighborhood. There was a shooting at sussex and rubicon last year, there is gang activity, and the low income apartment complexes and duplexes along sussex, rubicon, brockway, and macinaw. There has been a rise of petty theft in the area and many of the homes are filled with short term renters. Even the city has written the area off. While they had all the equipment to repave the highland woods neighborhood in the area, they skipped the “Tahoe 50” area. any ideas how to improve this neighborhood?
No matter where you live there will always be some problems. I still hold fast that the safest neighborhoods are those in which people become neighbors. We have a lot of rental properties in our communities but we also have a lot of full timers. Make this the year you get connected and make a difference.
Shooting in Sierra tract early last summer and it was right next door. Fortunately no one was injured. Just a near miss. Police took the couple to jail and were very polite in there questioning of me of what I saw, heard and knew about my neighbours. So. Shore is not the the same as it was when I was a kid.
Stay safe, Old Long Skiis
Unfortunately, it seems most neighborhoods in our community have small gangs with guns now. I live at the Y and had gang crossfire directly across from my driveway last year in the early evening where anyone, including all of the kids in this area, could have been. You just never know about any neighborhood here since people come and go so frequently. I agree with Lisa that it’s a good idea to get to know your neighbors this year. I helped two women carry bags home from Raley’s last week and they were so grateful and ended up living right next to me and I’d never seen them before.
Remember last summer when there was a report of a drive by shooting in Al Tahoe neighborhood… i lived one house away from that shooting and they shot in the direction of my home …. easily could have hit me my Boyfriend or my neighbors kids, dosnt matter what neighborhood its in this stuff is happening all over in SLT
i lived in tahoe when i was young, and ive seen it change drastically and thats why i left. i knew if i stayed nothing good would happen. when kids in tahoe dont come from money are from broken or dysfunctional families they tend to go in the wrong direction and find the garbage because its so easy to be bad.they get bored start drinking, smoking pot, then when the pot gets boring they find a new way to feel and then their doing meth then extasy then cocaine, now they have a record everyone knows their name, cops know them on sight and their young lives are ruined..trust me i know,… i know teens didnt have anything to do with this but i figured it was a good place as any to speak about tahoe and its changes, its just my opinion. keep your kids busy, they aren’t like we were back in the day, now they are born smarter! they dont just watch Gilligan’s island or mash after school. we have to be all up in their business so that they dont end up like the man who’s life ended in the middle of the street, for?
you can actually call the PD to find out about a particular neighborhood and the incidents. use the telephone, they’re actually really very helpful
Lisa, I agree with you in theory. Looking down my street I see a 16 unit apartment complex, a 4 unit complex, duplex, duplex, duplex, single family home with renter, vacation home, 2 small units on one lot, 3 unit complex, duplex, single family home and single family home with short term renters. Only 2 people own on this street own. No vacation rentals. It’s a transient neighborhood. Renters rarely take pride in the neighborhood. Getting to know my neighbors becomes a full time job with the amount of turnover. How do you improve this area?
The city started the neighborhood team meetings. I thought they were a great idea (I live in the county so didn’t have one for my neighborhood). Perhaps that is a start to get to know your neighbors, watch out for each other and become friends. Neighborhood Watch was a good program so maybe that should be revisited.
There will be problems no matter what town you live in, and there are some great families and kids in our area. It’s up to us to make this a great place to live.
There have been 2 neighborhood team meetings so far for highland woods/sierra tract. I attended the first and missed the second due to being at work. Turnout was low at the first meeting. Maybe 12 people or so. Snow removal and code enforcement seemed to be the themes of the meeting I attended. Also talk of neighbors getting together to clean up decrepit lots was discussed. it’s better than nothing. But, how do you encourage transient residents to take ownership of a neighborhood they will be in for a year and then move on? How do you encourage landlords to invest in rental properties that are bringing in income regardless of the appearance? How do you remove negative elements of a neighborhood? I don’t know.
6 PM Wednesday January 16th will be the next tentatively scheduled neighborhood meeting for Highland Woods and Sierra tract at the city recreation center. Apparently the meeting will be canceled if no person volunteers to be a captain.
Seems this has turned into a Neighborhood Service Team Discussion rather than on topic.
I’d like to see a separate article about the successes/challenges of the Neighborhood Teams. Mine has a captain but the city representative seems to be misinformed by the city on items discussed.
