Swiss Chalet restaurant staying closed for now
The iconic Swiss Chalet restaurant will remain closed for several more months.
When reached last fall, owner Peter Baumann told Lake Tahoe News the South Lake Tahoe restaurant would reopen Dec. 12. That didn’t happen. On Jan. 7, he told LTN it will open in the summer.
He said personal reasons are keeping the restaurant closed.
While there is a for sale sign on the property, Baumann said it is for the center. Asked if the restaurant is for sale, he said, “I can’t disclose that right now.”
The center has been on the market since last spring.

The Baumann,s do have another son has he just disapeared in thin air?
The Swiss Chalet, one of my favorite resturaunts on So.Shore. Great food and great atmosphere.
To the Baumann’s I hope you get things worked out and re-open soon.Gotta have my fondue fix. Take care, Old Long Skiis
I wish we had a full on Fondue place in town!
Fortunately, the new (and very cool) Basecamp Hotel has started a Dinner Club that serves fondue, raclette, and other delicious dishes. Served on their communal table. I’ve been a few times already, and it was REALLY good and fun to meet both locals and people visiting from out of town. Definitely worth checking out.

whatever base camp owner.. not enough business or what..
Nope, I’m not the owner… although I do know him. Sorry to all the LTN trolls out there for trying to share one actually cool and innovative new business in this town. Serves me right for opening my mouth.
And if you’re going to Basecamp, the Dinner Club is regularly sold out, so plan ahead.
Thanks Scott. It’s always good to know there is something new in town to try.
why someone choose to diss someone’s referal to a new place in town that might offer an alternative to a menu similar to Swiss Chalet (along with so many other negative and not particularly useful or insightful comments on this site)is a pretty good indicator of what is wrong with much of Tahoe’s social scene and business community!
As the owner of Basecamp Hotel, thanks Scott for your comments. We’re definitely not a full on restaurant like the Swiss Chalet, that place also has the great Swiss decors and is a real restaurant, but if you fancy a laid back Guinness Stew, Fondue or Raclette, we are trying to get people together for communal style dinners like you might have at a Pensione, Refuge or Chalet in the Alps.
We are not a typical restaurant, our dinners are at 6:30pm on Wed, Fri and Sat nights and everyone eats together so that people can connect with others and chat about all the great things Tahoe has to offer. Also, you have to book a place by 3pm the day of.
Hey, it’s not for everyone, we only have 18 seats, but hopefully it will be a fun little addition to the Tahoe scene.
I’ll definitely be back to the Swiss Chalet when they re-open, so good luck Baumanns, I know how tough it can be to get a business re-opened in Tahoe.
