MARIBOR, Slovenia — Lindsey Vonn (Vail) powerfully mastered the Golden Fox in Maribor for a stunning giant slalom victory Jan. 26 to capture the 59th Audi FIS Alpine World Cup win of her career.

Third after the opening run, Vonn accelerated immediately after breaking the start wand, nearly went on her hip mid run and picked up speed all the way to the finish to win the second run, regulating hometown hero Tina Maze to second. The four-time World Cup overall champion is now three short of Austrian great Annemarie Moser-Proell’s women’s victory record of 62.

It was Vonn’s first giant slalom win since March 9, when she clinched her fourth overall title with victory in Are, Sweden.

Hometown favorite Tina Maze was second to continue leading the overall and giant slalom standings.

Julia Mancuso (Squaw Valley) finished eighth and Mikaela Shiffrin (Eagle-Vail) 13th for her fourth giant slalom top 15 this season.
