Big 5 entertaining thoughts of opening in S. Tahoe
Big 5 Sporting Goods is eyeballing South Lake Tahoe as a possibility for a store location.
The Southern California-based sporting good retailer has long been rumored to want to operate on the South Shore. In the past, they had been linked to the resurrection of the old Millers Outpost. With T.J. Maxx opening there last fall, the athletic store chain has being looking elsewhere.
Now the spot of choice is at the Factory Stores at the Y in the old Adidas location. (They also looked at the old Sports Ltd. spot near Raley’s at the Y.)
An out of town sign maker contacted the city’s planning staff on Feb. 12.
“It is not an application for signage, which is the official document. It is a proposal to see if the signage would work,” associate planner Judy Finn told Lake Tahoe News. “Please be aware that we have had many inquiries similar to this for businesses that have not panned out.”
Officials from Big 5 did not return a call. It is not known what Big 5 officials know about the financial troubles the owners of the Y stores are having.

Wow, just what we need! Another corporate box store. NOT!
they do not sell skis boots or bindings
SLT is fortunate to have ANY business consider opening here, especially a going concern such as big 5. given the flux of the property, maybe this is the time to get moving with long-needed improved ingress/egress for lampson plaza…
@ C.Dub… Yeah… it is just what we need! Any store to keep Kmart on their toes and someone to shoot some realistic pricing into Sports L.T.D. would be great. Empty Buildings don’t generate anything for our city! @ Robert Greer… same, an empty building doesn’t carry Ski boots or bindigs either, but the million local Ski shops do! I dig it and am for it and will be at their doorstep ready to purchase several items regularly. I only hope that they opt for the empty unit at the Raley’s center though.
What Tahoe needs is a more diverse market. For decades, Tahoe has offered jacked up prices and bad customer service. Perhaps some friendly competition is what we need.
We have enough sports here that they don’t need to carry ski equipment.
How long has Adidas been closed?
I hope they don’t run into the TRPA air quality BS. Jack them up for a couple hundred thousand so they can spend it on the loop road.
speaking of T.J.Maxx, did you know that in late December the parent company purchased Sierra Trading Post. Would anyone like to see Sierra Trading Post in SLT? I think you can leave a comment on the Facebook page for both companies.
