Letter: Loop road would help businesses
To the community,
I arrived at Lake Tahoe in 1965 and purchased the then-existing Cecil’s Market at the corner of Park Avenue and Lake Tahoe Boulevard.
Since 1965, there have been many lofty attempts at revitalizing portions of the city, especially along the Highway 50 corridor. Thanks to the persistence of forward thinkers in our community, the keystone project of these efforts resulted in the completion of the Heavenly Village-Marriott complex. This went a long way toward promoting the back bone of our economy: tourism.
These projects are only the beginning in enhancing our area, and addressing the traffic problems with the Loop Road is a must. The stalled convention center project will be finished one day, with others to come.
Please keep in mind that a sound and inviting infrastructure always attracts new businesses and positive tourist experiences. Lake Tahoe deserves no less.
Sincerely yours,
John P. Jovicich, Cecil’s Fountain Plaza
John since you moved I never bought a thing from you, you remember Ralph the deli sandwich maker, tall red hair, runner at So.Lake High school,he moved to the valley became a real millionaire. No Kidding.
Yes you made more money, but the old store was better. Harrahs valet,Red carpet inn,Ballad union, golf course mini, monks pizza, bus station with real buse going somewhere out town on the highway, water wheel, post office close by,76 gas, tahoe t’s,holiday inn, happy steaks,Movie house we all could afford are greatly Missed!
Looks aren’t everything, it’s core of the people who live here, liked it just the way it is. or was!
I think for the people who live over there on the old road where the brass polishers use to live, the people need to think to replace that housing area before any tore down.
John P and HangUps,
As far as the loop road helping business? Thats debateable. I’m a “no loop road” guy but there have been some good arguments in favor of it here on LTN. Gives me food for thought.
The original Cecils was way cool back in the day. My friend Mark worked there nights making sandwhiches in the early 70S. Me and some of my high school buddies would hang out in the the deli as he worked.
Bill Kingman showed me an aerial photo of Cecils from WAY back when. Pretty cool! Nothin’ much around except for your old store, where the drive in was, a few scatterd buildings and lots of trees.
HangUps, good call and you have a pretty good memory. The 2 stuffed bears at the La Baer motel in the display case? El Pavo mexican resturant? Perry boys Smorgy?
There’s a bunch more I could mention, but let me finish by saying something before someone takes a jab at me about living in the past by one of the many critics that comment here on LTN…
I don’t live in the past, the past lives in me! …
(and all the other old fogeys who still call this place home)
Take Care, Old Long Skiis
