Phone scammers calling NV Energy customers
A scam is targeting NV Energy customers.
The utility is warns people that callers are identifying themselves as company employees who then threaten to disconnect the power if a credit card payment or cash transfer is not made over the phone immediately.
The utility does not call customers to solicit payments. Instead, 10-day and 48-hour notices are sent via U.S. mail.
People who receive a suspicious call should call law enforcement or NV Energy at (775) 834.4444.
This sounds similar to the electric company phone scam discussed at http://www.callercenter.com/blg/articles/electric-company-phone-scam/. Based on the article, the scammer poses as a utility company rep and demands money from the victim as a payment for an unpaid electric bill. This is the authorities are encouraging everyone to be cautious against anonymous calls. If the call becomes suspicious, hang up and report it.
NEVER give your account or credit card information to anyone who calls you. Businesses do not call to get payments by phone. Protect yourself. If you get one of these calls tell them that you do not have the information at hand and you will call back. Then call the customer service number on your bill or in the phone book. These scammers keep doing this because unsuspecting people are scared into giving out this information.
Again, NEVER give your information to someone who calls you and threatens to cut off services or send you to collections. Call the company yourself.
