A 200-pound black bear wandered into an Incline Village home on Aug. 20 after it pushed through a screen door.

Family members locked themselves in rooms and called for help.

Washoe County sheriff’s deputies shot rubber bullets at the animal, which scared it away. The bear was last seen running into the woods.

No one was hurt.

I would like to know the statistics regarding bear to human contacts, and how many people have been injured by bears during these encounters. What I am most interested in learning is if bears pose a real danger to us humans, or if there is an over reaction to these bear to human incidents. If out of one hundred incidents, only two persons are injured, then I would conclude that there is not significant danger to humans, caused by bear contact. I’m not normally in favor of wildlife safety over human safety. I have lived here in Tahoe for several years, and from what I’ve read over the years about bear incidents, the bears in this region are not very dangerous. I cannot recall any incident where a bear has seriously injured a person. People that have encountered bears seem to enjoy telling their story about their bear encounter. These do not seem to be horror stories, but instead they tend to be adventure stories that always end when the bear runs away. Don’t get me wrong, I have seen bears near the bike paths near Camp Richardson, and never did I fail to give a bear his or her proper distance of respect. Once I waited five minutes before the bear moved away from the bike path, before I passed. Never have I ever heard of a bear aggressively charging a person. So, in my opinion, there has been an over reaction, by government, against bears. There was a story about a bear being euthanized after the bear made contact with humans three times. One way of looking at this bear could have been that in three cases of human contact, the bear didn’t hurt anyone. The government considered the bear dangerous because there were three cases. I think the government’s opinion was wrong. I don’t know anyone that is afraid to go for a walk in these forests. If I’m wrong, tell me about it. What do most of you think out there ?
