Wildfires and climate change go together

By Kate Galbraith, New York Times

SAN FRANCISCO — The huge wildfire scorching one of America’s most beloved national parks, Yosemite, has rained ash on San Francisco’s water supply and jolted the nation.

Experts say this is just a foretaste of major fires to come, in the United States and much of the world.

Increasing incursions by humans into forests, coupled with altered forest ecology and climate change, will make fires bigger and more destructive, with implications for air quality as well as homes and infrastructure.

“We face the increased risk of fires almost everywhere,” said Chris Field, director of the department of global ecology at the Carnegie Institution for Science, who is co-chairman of a working group for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

There have always been forest fires, of course. But their patterns are changing because of people.

Hey, did you check out the farmers almanac? It’s calling for a historic cold winter. In fact some scientists in Europe are sayin’ there’s an ice age a comin’

Hmmm… you Al Goreites might start looking for a hole to stick your head in so ya can hide from all the finger pointing and the laughing…

Don’t get me wrong, I am all for research on this important topic but by real scientists not the Al Gore followers type of approach.

Sadly CJ McCoy, your ignorance on the issue is stunning. A warming earth has to do with the global average, and the trend over the last few decades which show a pronounced increase in temp (as far as global temps go) over the last 800,000 years (ice core from Greenland 123,000 yrs Antarctic 800,000 yrs; see http://www.antarctica.ac.uk/press/journalists/resources/science/ice_cores_and_climate_change_briefing-sep10.pdf). In fact a much faster rise then has ever occurred over the last several hundred thousand years. A global average means parts of the earth can actually experience cooler temp in a given year, but the overall global average is tended up. So quite listening to the Koch Brothers as there really is no credible evidence that climate change is not real and largely caused by anthropogenic factors.

PS: Al Gore does not claim to have done any research, merely carrying the message from the scientific community (97% of all climate scientist).

    Rick,

Of course climate changes … dah

McCoy, the major cycles (orbit, tilt, etc.) we should be experiencing a cooling, but instead we are experiencing an unprecedented warming. Green house gases have risen to levels never before documented (at least given the last 800,000 years). Yes using oil products are causing the earth to warm. duh!!!

I’m with CJ – Much to do about nothing. We can’t even report on the true level of unemployment were suppose to believe folks knew what the earths core temp. was 100 years ago. Rick, the sky isn’t falling.

The way that so many people can be brainwashed on this issue is amazing. It exploits and empowers the weak minded “robot slave” types that can’t think for themselves. They shovel the drivel that the schools give them and think they are coming off smart.

Boone6651 makes the perfect point “We can’t even report on the true level of unemployment we’re suppose to believe folks knew what the earths core temp. was 100 years ago.”

Only a moron can’t grasp that logic.

As I said I support research on this issue. I think that the fraudsters that have received government tax money and then cooked their data, they should go to prison. THat would start to bring truth back to this issue.

Its really unfortunate that this blog lets the likes of cjm and the other monikers he/she uses to post the abusive and irritating bs without editing or eliminating the anger and threatening tone that is obvious in every post by this individual. I thought it was monitored and abusive and threateing posts were omitted.
