Diabetes kills one person every six seconds and afflicts 382 million people worldwide, according to the International Diabetes Federation, which has been canvassing the help of people ranging from celebrity chef Jamie Oliver to Bob Marley’s nephew to raise awareness about the problem.

The number of diabetes cases has climbed 4.4 percent over the past two years, according to new figures the Brussels-based federation released today. The number of people affected by the disease is expected to climb 55 percent to 592 million by 2035 as factors including poor diet, a more sedentary lifestyle, increases in obesity and life expectancy fuel an epidemic, it said. There were only 285 million sufferers worldwide in 2009.

“We haven’t seen any kind of stabilizing, any kind of reversal,” Leonor Guariguata, an epidemiologist and project coordinator for IDF’s Diabetes Atlas, published every two years, said in a phone interview. “Diabetes continues to be a very big problem and is increasing even beyond previous projections.”

    That’s 0.000138% of the world’s population affected.

Sounds like this is a pitch to attract $ for researchers.

tahoeadvocate- sounds like your mathematics appear to be skewed by some inate sense of selfish greed-government+ private research will hopefully find some answers to why this devastating illness is climbing so fast- people that actually have a clue-like real scientists and medical professionals-predict its actually more like 8% now and 10% of the worlds people that will be affected by diabetes by 2035-not that some are actually capable of caring

If the fat lazy slobs got off their Lazyboy recliners and did some solid exercise on a regular basis and ate a reasonably healthy diet, I bet the rate of diabetes would dramatically drop. You can’t wait until you are afflicted to start living healthy.
Exercise means uping the heart rate for at least 30 minutes.

GMO’s are the culprit. I hope scientists will tell us the truth about the link to the genetic modification of crops and the explosion in diabetes.

I’ll bet that “one person” is getting tired of the routine.

    suspicious mind:

Your generalization that every Diabetic is a fat, lazy, slob that sits in a recliner is incorrect. My brother in law was diagnosed with Diabetes at age 50, ate a very healthy diet, was quite slender, jogged every day, played basketball, owned and worked in his owned fabrication shop, and built and raced cars for a hobby. He is now nearing 70, remains active, and still has his shop and builds cars.

I think that people who use all encompassing
generalizations should learn to preface their remarks with “I think” instead of making blatant statements as fact.
