Sprinkling a bit of truth with a ton of humor, the sold-out crowd was transported to a time with Mark Twain walked the shores of Lake Tahoe.

McAvoy Layne entertained a large group Sunday at a fundraiser for the South Lake Tahoe Library. He is a legendary Twain impersonator.

Sharing his take on what happened when a fire that Twain and a friend started got out of control, Layne said, “I like to take credit for the first prescribed burn up here.”

Sitting in the library chairs and couches, enjoying adult beverages and hearty appetizers, it was a bit like an adult storytime as Layne carried on about days gone by.

The second volume of Twain’s autobiography came out this fall, with the third and final volume set for release in 2016. Asked why his words are being published more than 100 years after his death, Layne said, “Because only a dead man can tell the truth.”

The money raised from the Nov. 3 event will be used by Friends of the Library to bring programs to the South Lake Tahoe Library.

As a guest and volunteer of this wonderful event, I can’t even begin to say how delightful the evening was. McAvoy wrote to me, “I never had so much fun in a library…thank you. Again, thanks to everybody there at the South Shore Library for the toast. It warmed my heart and it is warm yet…”.

Diane Wilkinson Catering was exceptional. What adult ‘story time’ (great way to word it Kae) would be complete without amazing, plentiful food? And the wines, donated from El Dorado Co. vintners, made toasting Twain, that much easier.

How fun to be amongst our favorite things: friends and books. What a night! I will totally raise a glass to that…

As a newbie here in South Lake Tahoe it was a privilege to have taken part in such a momentous first time fundraiser that the Friends of the Library held on Sunday to celebrate Mark Twain with the wonderful impressionist, McAvoy Layne. What stood out for me was the amazing people who attended and support the library, the food that was delicious, the music that brought us all back, and the intimacy of the venue which was the library. What better place to hold this fundraiser!

We were encouraged to eat, drink, and laugh in library! What fun.

One of the many fabulous things about our libraries is that that they are free & open to everyone: all ages, all economic backgrounds, all education levels, genders, nationalities, locals & travelers ~ the best of democracy.

Supporting our library is an honor, and fun, too.

The evening was an absolute delight. Mr. Twain was delightful and I have enjoyed seeing him over the years. I absolutely loved the details of the event including the little cards on the tables with his most thoughtful sayings. “If you tell the truth, you never have to remember anything.” Thank you FOL for your work and support of our library!

    An enjoyable evening.

A very worthwhile cause, interesting people, good food and an entertaining slice of American history/culture.

I’ll certainly attend the next one!
