Lack of snow makes slopes more dangerous
By Colin Lygren, KOLO-TV
As families continue their holiday vacations, many will be heading up the hill to catch some fresh turns. But this year the mountain may be a little more dangerous than in years past.
Last year we got a lot of snow early in the season and by late December, ski resorts were actually looking pretty good. This year, there’s not much snow at all which means less mountain for skiers and boarders to enjoy.
The problem at Tahoe area resorts started two months ago when the snow never came.
“Lack” of snow? How about no base whatsoever.
You couldn’t pay me to ski in these conditions. You’re risking injury to yourself and damage to your gear. It’s not worth it.
I’m tired of seeing this so often. Once every three or four years is acceptable to me. But it seems like every other year now is a lean snow year. This is really harmful to our economy. I guess I’m not saying anything we don’t already know. This is like sending another recession our way.
Above 8k feet should be nice. Heavenly has more runs above 8k feet than some resorts have in total. Also, some resorts don’t sell any more lift tickets when to crowded.
Perry, Heavenly had two unreported deaths last weekend. One woman from down in the valley who died the next day at Renown with a head injury and another was taken down the tram on Saturday already dead.
Some day we will have real injury and death statistics for ski resorts, an industry that might be the sole holdout in transparency of people injured, or lost their lives while at their resorts.
Another sobering, serious reason to keep the Heavenly tram. Make the descent down one’s final run in dignity.
