Most SnowGlobers were bouncing to the music blasting from the speakers on Day 1 of the three-day South Lake Tahoe music festival, but plenty more were chilling in the warming tent.

A sea of bodies at the three stages moved to the music supplied by bands and disc jockeys. While the temperature felt warmer this year, more people were fully clothed than the last two years.

Inside the warming area the sounds from the main stage were crystal clear. People were sprawled on what is normally the turf of Lake Tahoe Community College’s soccer field. A full bar warmed people in other ways. The only thing that could have made this more ideal would have been screens to see the action going on outside.

While the number of noise complaints is considerably less than the first year, the bass is louder than last year.

“There is considerably more bass and noise than last year,” a resident of Pioneer Village told Lake Tahoe News at 4:15pm Sunday. The concert had started an hour earlier.

Bijou Park closed
“Like last year the park is utilized for SnowGlobe staff and equipment parking. South Tahoe Middle School is the nearest offsite parking for vehicles traveling to SnowGlobe. The park will reopen to the public on New Year’s Day.”

“(The) first year was awful and very unnerving. We had pictures fall off the walls. Last year was better. We’ll see what this year brings,” the resident added.

About 15 noise complaints were filed with the city the first night.

“Sound monitoring is being conducted throughout the event. No violation of permissible sound limits has occurred thus far,” Police Chief Brian Uhler told Lake Tahoe News.

It’s likely the lack of snow contributed to the sound not being absorbed. Plus, as the wind shifted, the noise drifted.

But for those at the concert, other than it being difficult to have a conversation at times, the sound was what they came for.

Lisi McMadden came up from Santa Barbara for her first SnowGlobe – and her first trip in Lake Tahoe. She will be back the next two nights. She’s already been snowboarding several days.

“My dad proposed to my mom in South Lake Tahoe. It’s a beautiful, magical place,” McMadden said.

She was waiting for Star Slinger to take the stage in the Sierra Tent. On New Year’s Eve she is looking forward to Snoop Dog.

Miasam Oeli made the trek from Los Angeles for the second year in a row.

He was enjoying the Polish Ambassador.

“It’s a relatable vibe,” Oeli told Lake Tahoe News. He described the DJ as reggae with a funky feel.

The only thing he liked better last year was the snow. The snowpack this year has Oeli questioning where he’ll hit the slopes while he’s here.

Buddies Andrew Laufer and Alex Jasmund also came up from Southern California. Jasmund did some research on the lesser known acts so he would be familiar with them.

They are both looking forward to Kaskade, who will be the last act on the main stage tonight.

Single-day and three-day tickets were still being sold Sunday. The last two years the event sold out.

“I noticed many hotels still had vacancies, so my guess is the extra visitors for the event is critical to businesses,” Uhler said.

I was impressed with how participants dispersed from the event. I was driving down Al Tahoe at 10:30 last night and concert goers were walking on sidewalks and respecting street lights and drivers. Buses were rolling everywhere and law enforcement and parking security were visible. I also bought the best ear plugs from CVS! Spend your money in our wonderful community kids!

“The Bass was louder” You bet it was. We live near Hekpa and Pioneer, the bass was heard and felt all the way to our home. Several neighbors were outside trying to find the house with the loud music. We all realized the noise was from Snow Globe.

In the 70’s we ran outdoor concerts and were able to control speakers with correct directional settings and sound boards. If we did not, we were fined, or shut down.

Sound can be controlled and not just with volume settings. It is impossible for me to believe with the technology of today, that no one is attempting to control the affect on all who live here.

First noise complaint has been filed.

I went to the meetings last year and explained to the College and City that there is a difference between megahertz and the bass sound. They chose to ignore(imagine that) and told the producer to turn the volume down. The producer did exactly what I said he would last year, turn the volume down but increase the bass. The bass sound was not included in the contract and cannot be enforced so you will have to suck it up. The only Ca business (two) that is really profiting from this are the two untaxed ones. Remember you get what you vote for. Btw, I think Snowglobe is good for the economy up here just not the Ca side economics as we get just a trickle after we pay for everything involved.

Seriously, people. It’s 3 nights of the year that bring a lot of positive things to our town. It’s over at 10pm, which is not particularly late, and thousands of people are enjoying themselves. Maybe you could find it in your hearts to realize that THREE DAYS is not a long time to be patient and accepting of others. In the grand scheme of things, is it really impacting your life THAT much? The power of positive thinking feels so much better than complaining!

While it’s certainly not my type of music, you have to support an event like this that brings people into the basin. Especially this year with absolutely no snow on the ground right now.

These are the sortof events we should all embrace as they bring incremental business into Tahoe that wouldn’t otherwise be here.

Tonight is a HUGE improvement over last night and I believe the city is doing everything they can to make everyone happy, which is no small feat! Last night I was aggravated with the thump, thump, thump for hours, add that to the kids not being able to sleep makes for one unhappy cranky Mom! Tonight it’s good in Al Tahoe and the kids are asleep!

Its going to be OK old people. The Cialis is just making you a little edgy.
Those skinny jeans wearing hippity hoppers will get off your lawns in a few days. I know their music sounds pretty bad.
Who would imagine, that they would Freak Out! somewhere in Tahoe
Tahoe Tahoe doo bee doo bee doo doo.
Tahoe Tahoe doo bee doo bee doo doo.

The noise from SnowGlobe has been reduced as to be practicaly unoticable here in Sierra Tract, thanks to our city council, the city manager Nancy Kerry and Police chief Brian Uhler. It looks to be a 100% improvement from the first year.
For those still complaining about the noise from SnowGlobe you should have been at the Funhouse back in the old days. It’s now Fremont Mall, where Aloha ice cream, Freshies and the Pirate store are located, also the location of So. Shores first Safeway. Santana, Buddy Miles,Steve Miller and so many others…. My hearing hasn’t been the same since!!! For really loud outdoor concerts I’d say Led Zeppelin In 1977 at the Oakland Coliseum ranks right up there. Myself, along with a bunch of other So. Shore crazies left the hill and saw what was their last live performance with the original group. Remember that one Jeff Tillman?
I’d also like to thank Thing fish for the Zappa reference, made me smile, allways a good way to celebrate the last day of the year.
Now if we could get some concerts in the same spot in the summer with the music more suited to some of us older folks and perfomed during the day time, that would be great!!!
Take care and see you next year , Old Long Skiis

I don’t make a cent from this event, won’t be attending and can hear the music inside my home but I fully support it. More people coming to SLT and having fun seems like a good thing. Hopefully, even if you are inconvenienced by the noise, you can be happy for the attendees having fun and businesses getting a bump. Happy New Year!

The only thing SnowGlobe brings to Tahoe is more trash, of which we already have more than our fair share. Whose stupid idea was this, anyway? Is SLT not enough of a slum? Let’s bring more stupid, drop-out, parasites to Tahoe. We don’t have enough morons here!

I live in in the vicinity of Ski Run and Pioneer and barely heard any music. The firework show only lasted 3-4 minutes. Pllus all of the shows ended on time. So a little lost sleep and a huge return on some needed revenue, nice how some of the locals cannot bite the bullet and support the community. I have two very young children and they were sleeping just fine. Then the trash problem; I drove by on 01/02 and there wasn’t any;so where is all of this trash that I have been reading about? Drugs? A little weed and some MDMA but I am sure there was a ton of alcohol there. So was it alright when there was a little weed and some acid back in the sixties when there were music festivals? I didn’t see people passed out on the road in that area or trying to sell their drugs to everyone driving/walking in that area. I believe there was only one or two arrests during the 3 day festival; wow so much crime that was brought to this town.

When there is anythiing that is successful that is brought here it gets defaced in the media. Be it the marathon (too much traffic), Renaissance Festival (noisy, plenty of drugs there and traffic), golf tournament (ditto on the complaints), etc…

We should embrace the fact that there are people willing to try and help out this community by bringing these events to the area, I would love to see the promoters of Snow Globe come back in the summer and do another concert. It would be nice to have it then; when it is warmer outside.

But the complainers would just want some some more “crap” fairs; because that brings in tons of tax revenue and TOT because everyone has to drive up here and stay the weekend for these events.

I wish Sierra-at-Tahoe would bring back Boarding for Breast Cancer; that event was very successful and brought in a lot revenue for the charity and the community.

I could go on and on but I don’t want to give the complainers too much fuel to trash talk my opinion.
