Areas of South Lake Tahoe without electricity

Trees went into a power line on Tahoe Island Drive in South Lake Tahoe twice on Thursday.

About 100 Liberty Utilities customers remained without power at 9pm after the second incident occurred at about 8:15pm Jan. 30.

Both times the majority of customers were without power for about 30 minutes.

People in the state streets, Tahoe Keys and from Steamers to Fresh Ketch were initially affected Thursday night. So were people in Fallen Leaf Lake, Camp Richardson and Cascade Lakes. Those three areas had been transferred to the same line because of weather related issues so they ended up without power Thursday night.

South Lake Tahoe police officers were dispatched to the street to make sure no one was injured by the live wire.

The storm that settled over the Lake Tahoe Basin for much of Thursday initially brought heavy wet snow that stressed the power lines and brought tree limbs down.

Trees very brittle from the drought, and weighted with heavy, dense, thick snow, had limbs that couldn’t stand up.

One of these day’s we are going to have a winter and there are very few old timers left that remember what a real winter is like, the last real winter was 1968 1969 but there are still a few that remember the winter of 1951 1952, nothing moved in the basin for weeks, you had to walk, hwy, 50 was closed and nothing came or went for weeks. Over 10 feet of snow in one storm over a 4 day period. power was out for several day’s, All snow removal equipment was broken and no parts were available because of the summit being closed. No school for a few weeks but we had to make it up in the summer. Those were the day’s when Tahoe was great place to live. We all new each other and no one ever had to lock a door or worry about someone stealing or robbing them.
Those were the good old day’s.

Thanks to the power company that responded and fixed the problem quickly under adverse conditions.

We also lost power out here in Meyers. The Elks Club Drive area was out for just about 30 minutes (8:15pm to 8:45pm) on Thursday. It has been a while since that has happened – – – in the dark. Needed to find the flashlights and hurricane candles!
