Homeland Security wants to track drivers

By Josh Hicks, Washington Post

The Department of Homeland Security plans to build a national database that would gather information from license-plate readers that scan every vehicle crossing their paths, according to a solicitation last week from the agency.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement would use the technology to help locate and arrest “absconders and criminal aliens,” reducing surveillance hours and enhancing officer safety, according to the request.

License-plate readers, which automatically record information on all vehicles that cross their paths instead of just suspect vehicles, are controversial among privacy advocates. The American Civil Liberties Union issued a report last year criticizing the increased use of such devices, saying they collect vast amounts of data on innocent individuals and could be used for abusive tracking and targeting.

Time to renew your membership in the ACLU. Or join.

(For what it’s worth, the ACLU of Nevada is on record as actively supporting citizens’ rights of gun ownership – if that helps deciding where to join)

“absconders and criminal aliens,” Using a hot button issue to add to the existing “Big Brother” network.

Re: ACLU. The Institute for Justice actually has a much better track record with individual rights. I’d recommend them highly. They’ve been protecting a lot of people across the country from eminent domain abuse by their local governments. And other abuses as well.

On top of this the FCC wants to basically invade the news room!

This is perhaps the most tyrannical move in American history.

We need to find out who in our government employment thinks like this and fire them.

The FCC got the word from the White House. They’re going for the purpose of determining what the ‘philosophy’ of the newsrooms is, how they decide what to publish, print, or screen. Appalling.

The Institute for Justice is a far right wing arm of the Koch Bros. that has spent most of its time and money on projects aimed at defunding and destroying the public school system. Wherever there’s a big pile of money to be stolen through privatization of the commons you can be sure they are on the scene with a campaign contribution and free legal advice for any POS willing to do their bidding. For every good deed they may do for some small biz facing eminent domain, they do 1000 times more harm by their ongoing sabotage of public education. They are just more anti-American, Cato Inst. bankrolled scum.

The evil Koch bros. oh my….

  9. go figure says - Posted: February 20, 2014

Yup cj, you said it. Koch personifies the most evil there is in this country. Glad you agree…

I know, lucky for the ‘slave minded’ types like yourself there is saint George Soros.

Now, click your heals and stand straight, no more talking.

This program has already been cancelled by Homeland Security….Thank God!

So, in an article about US Immigration and Customs tracking vehicle movement to find illegal immigrants (aliens), we have the “big scare” items of: eminent domain, the FCC and newsroom invasion and guns. With the obligatory mentions of both the Koch Brothers and George Soros. What poignant commentary!

  14. CJ McCoy says - Posted: February 21, 2014

    dumb,

You seem to have a reading comprehension problem. it is not an article about US Immigration and Customs tracking vehicle movement. That was just an example of its use.

It is obviously a much bigger issue that rightfully concerns people, perhaps you are comfortable being a slave in a slave state, most of us are not.

Given your previous comments on this site and after re-reading the article, I am going to take your comment as a compliment, C.J. There are absolutely no references to “… eminent domain, the FCC’s newsroom invasion and guns” anywhere in the full article. Nor are there any references to the Koch Brothers or George Soros. I especially enjoy your adolescent distortion of my chosen screenname, it adds to your wonderful and credible reputation as being reasonable and thoughtful. Thanks for playing.

Funny how cjpwbk always whines about all the illegals out there and how they should go back to where they came from so the govmnt sets up a program to try and track these horrible, terrible people and what does cjpwbk do?

    DRUM ROLL PLEASE

HE WHINES. But that was a predictable answer. World peace he whines, stoping world hunger, he whines, solving all world problems he whines. And it will always be the fault of obama and liberals and california. So we really dont need to read his posts cuz they all say the very same thing.
