ADA attorney targeting North Shore businesses

A slew of small businesses on the North Shore have recently been targeted by a disabled attorney, claiming they are not in compliance with the federal Americans with Disabilities Act. Scott Johnson, who is known around the state and locally for filing these types of lawsuits, has sued at least 45 businesses from Kings Beach to Tahoma since November.

He made the rounds on the South Shore a few years ago.

Johnson, who was hit by a drunken driver in 1981 that left him a quadriplegic, sends letters to businesses stating they are noncompliant with the federal law that requires a minimum level of access in all public places. His most recent accusations against local businesses have been that handicapped spaces are not properly marked, the ramps to the businesses are too steep, and/or the door handles are not push/pull handles, among other complaints. He is asking anywhere from $22,000 to $25,000 per lawsuit.

Johnson is no stranger to the Tahoe/Truckee area, having filed numerous lawsuits against small businesses locally a few years ago, even putting Donner Lake Kitchen in Truckee out of business in 2011. He has filed more than 2,000 federal lawsuits in the California Eastern District Court in Sacramento since 2004.

This puke is nothing more than an angry man bent on ruining other peoples lives because his has been. His karma made him what he is today and karma will hopefully put an end to these ridiculous lawsuits. Pathetic little man.

If he has to go to trial, he drops the suit. He usually loses if he goes to trial.

You can thank all the lawyers in the country for this sue happy butthead. This country is run by lawyers for lawyers. How happy is Jim Porter with all the business from defending the businesses that are sued. Just one lawyer, Johnson, making money for two lawyers, what a rip off !

He’s back . . . . . ! Anyone remember when lawyers used to claim they adhered to some sort of principles of ethics, and some even did? Wonder where they went?

I tried, but I can’t leave that question unanswered. I dare any lawyer who reads this forum to step up and defend his or her profession by taking on this fool. If you can’t even take that step, than quit responding here (not meaning to step on your toes, Kae).

You have to take him to trial and he will drop the suit before trial.

This miserable, hateful being is a menace to society. Do unto others and be prepared for the return. I have a feeling his time is nigh.

Is this the same guy who was banned from filing lawsuits in the Eastern District? There are laws against frivolous litigation. Seems like turnabout would be very fair play in this instance.

They should send him to Pinewild to make sure all the second story units and common areas are compliant.

Sunriser… every unit in PineWild has two stories… and, they’re also private, which means that they’re exempted from the ADA.
