Updated 2pm:

No explosive devices were found at the Y center in South Lake Tahoe this afternoon.

Two South Lake Tahoe detectives and the school resource officer are trying to track down the kids who made the alleged threat. They want to determine if a device may have been planted elsewhere or was a hoax.

South Tahoe High School will be released at normal hours.

The South Lake Tahoe Raley’s center at the Y has been evacuated and South Tahoe High School is in shelter in place because of a bomb threat.

“Students are remaining in the classrooms and are in no danger,” the school district said in an email.

A Kmart employee overheard youths saying they were going to plant a bomb, South Lake Tahoe spokeswoman Tracy Franklin told Lake Tahoe News. She said the kids left the store about noon May 29 and then the employee took a walk outside. That person heard a ticking device by the mailboxes and then called the police.

Officer Aaron Crawford, who has bomb experience, saw the suspicious device and called in Tahoe Douglas bomb squad. The first Tahoe Douglas crew then called in reinforcements.

STHS is on lockdown to keep those students safe and not bring more people into the area.

Highways 89 and 50 are open, as is Lake Tahoe Boulevard, and neighboring businesses.

Was getting ready to shop at Raleys. Saw 5 P.D. vehicles around k-mart, raleys. Entered Raleys and then heard the announcement to leave the store and parking lot. Sounds like a stupid kid thing to me, and if they are caught should be given a stupid kid punishment.

I was at the shopping center working, got to watch the whole thing.

    it was pretty good entertainment.

I just got a phone call saying that it was this years Senior Prank.

  7. mrs.t says - Posted: May 30, 2014

if it were this year’s senior prank then all the kids involved should 1) have to pay for the cost of all the responders, 2) have to do big time community service and 3) shouldn’t walk at graduation. It’s one thing to cover the school in post-its or create a sandy beach in the parking lot but it is quite another to tie up public safety resources and make a terroristic threat and they should be punished for that.

This is not a senior prank. Since 9/11/01 this is a terrorist act. Maybe a few months in Gitmo or at least the ElDo jail will help mature these little punks.

we pay for facilities that are not readily accessible to us (new art and tennis court investments, for example) and this is a ‘senior prank’? get this, punks: graduating from high school just ain’t that big a deal!

    Lighten up Francis

further: if it turns out that this is a ‘senior prank’, the punks involved should for starters be required to forfeit their college funds to pay back businesses and taxpayers, with public apology an additional aspect of their punishment.

Not “punks” but low intelligence vermin and a real class act. This is what parents are turning out these days and “their kids that can do no wrong”.

This is a federal offense and I am certain every kid knows that from TV.They will be lucky to stay out of prison, if they do. I so agree that paying back all the money and a couple years of community service is appropriate. Their parents are going to be paying legal fees up the nose to keep these idiots out of jail. Maybe they should do a little jail time too. Brilliant kids to not know there are cameras everywhere. WTG to ruin your life right before graduation.
