sltpd• Don’t be surprised to see South Lake Tahoe police officers on bicycles this summer. They will be joining the motorcycle cops in targeted enforcement to educate the public about pedestrian and bicycle safety laws.

• Philip Hartley will be Lake Tahoe Community College’s interim vice president of Instruction for the 2014-15 school year.

• Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra swarmed El Dorado Beach on June 19 wielding litter picker-uppers and trash bags. More than 10 pounds of trash was collected – ranging from a pair of men’s underwear to cigarette butts.

• Jody Jones is retiring as Caltrans District 3 director, which includes Lake Tahoe. She will be a councilmember in Paradise, which is north of Chico.

• Here are the Caltrans El Dorado-Tahoe and Sierra roadwork schedules for the week.

    Well, I’d sure rather see the local cops on bikes than in MRAPs!

    SLT cops were on bicycles years ago – didn’t realize they’d discontinued the program.

    The biggest advantage that bicycle cops have in summertime South Lake Tahoe is the ability to get to calls and crime scenes through the typical Hwy 50 jam up. Since many neighborhoods don’t connect except on Hwy 50, it might take a police car close to an hour to get from the Al Tahoe neighborhood to Tahoe Keys – less than 15 minutes on a bike.

    All they’re lacking is a three wheeler with a prisoner holding cell on the back.
