Standup paddleboard competition in S. Tahoe

image_pdfimage_print

Paddleboard competitors will be taking over El Dorado Beach this weekend for the annual Race the Lake of the Sky.

The two-day event (June 28-29) includes a variety of races for varying abilities. All include starting and finishing at the South Lake Tahoe beach and maneuvering around buoys. The distance course has standup paddlers going into Emerald Bay.

Kona Brewing Company is getting in on the action as one of the sponsors. While the Hawaiian beer has been available on the main land for a while, it wasn’t until this spring that its Castaway IPA was brought ashore. LTN has sampled it and believes it would pair nicely with spectating the SUP races this weekend.

But for those who want to participate, onsite registration is available both days starting at 6am. For more info about the event, go online.

The Standup paddleboard competition is looking to be drawing ALOT of competitors. The visitors renting the house down the street unloaded 8 boards into the vacation house a couple doors down the street.
These folks were pumped up to be at Tahoe “and get out of the valley heat” (their words) and get out on the lake!
More events like this are good for everyone, locals and tourist alike. Healthy, non polluting fun and at the same time helps our economy.
One of my temporary new neighbors said that there were at least a thousand people in town for this event. That helps fill resturants, stores, gas stations etc,etc etc.
If we can keep events like this coming, along with the construction of a year round outdoor event center maybe we can bring this old town back to its glory of days gone by.
The casinos are sadly on the decline, so South Shore needs to play on it’s strenghts.
Our close proximity to one of the most beautiful lakes in the world, hiking and biking trails, excellent skiing all around us, clean air and water, good fishing and camping…. I could go on and on but I think you get the idea!
So if you see a Paddleboarder this weekend, go up and shake their hand and welcome them to Tahoe, “Americas year round playground”. Happy paddelin’, OLS

I think we should get you out on a Paddle Board. If you want to learn the Brackets are the ones to teach, I could arrange for you to do it for the first time comped. The VIP party of the top Athletes was fun tonight. I don’t think there will be a thousand racers they are hoping for at least 450 on the 5 mile race, that would be something lined up from el dorado to beach retreat.

LETS MAKE YOU ONE OF THOSE HAPPY PADDLERS!!

    Hi OLS:

You might want to check out a Parks and Recreation Commission Meeting. A lot of your comments and the mindset of those Commission Members are darn close to parallel with how they’d like to shape recreation in our community. Also, Commission Chair Pete Fink shows up at nearly every City Council meeting and reports near the beginning of the meeting during City Commission Reports and I think you’d really enjoy his reports. This Parks and Recreation Commission seems to be a group of really enthusiastic people that are very dedicated to developing great recreation in SLT, and while the Commission is the “mouthpiece” to the City Council so to speak, I think they’ve got a huge contingent of people supporting what they’re doing who are very determined.

I bet you’d also be interested in the Recreation Master Plan that’s being developed. That’s not scheduled for release until late July or August I think, but it should also be very interesting. Some really good stuff is taking place related to recreation.

Enjoy a happy, wildfire-free weekend. The weather forecast calls for abundant sunshine, high near 80F, winds SSW at 10 to 15 mph. Just another one of those picture perfect days in SLT–
